Holywell Town looked to get back to winning ways after last week’s disappointing defeat to Llanrug and welcomed 2nd from bottom Llanrwst Untied to Hal

The Wellmen had the first real effort on goal as a corner from the left saw the ball flicked on by Dafydd Griffith towards Phil Lloyd but his shot went over the bar. A few minutes later, a Llanrwst United break saw Josh Francis chip the ball goalwards and with Danny Stanton beaten, the ball luckily hit the crossbar then was gathered to safety. A few minutes later, Town won a free kick on the edge of the box but Steve Thomas’ free kick flashed inches wide of the post.

Town were unlucky not to fall behind in the 15th minute, a slip by Dafydd Griffith saw Llanrwst’s Arron Jones break clear and he was one on one with Danny Stanton but a last ditch tackle by Matty Harvey saw Jones’ shot deflect out for a corner. A minute or so later however, Town did fall behind. A corner from the right saw the ball go in off the back of Harvey’s head. It was an unfortunate goal to concede but Town made amends a minute later as they drew level.

A quick break by Sam Jones on the right saw him beat the challenge of a Llanrwst defender, and his cross into the box was picked up by Phil Lloyd and his shot was blocked by Paul Roberts in the LLanrwst goal, but Lloyd reacted quickest to get the rebound and after controlling the ball, his shot flew into the back of the net.

Town went looking for a second with Paul Williams and Steve Thomas going close, before Sam Jones had a shot blocked late in the half. Jones put in another great cross but Dafydd Griffith’s cheeky flick saw the ball go inches wide and that meant the scores remained all square at the break.

A few minutes into the second half, Matty Roberts was tripped on the edge of the box and Steve Thomas’ effort went inches over. Town then lost Captain Paul Williams who picked up a knock and he was replaced by Sion McHugh. Another excellent cross by Sam Jones was only a little to high for the oncoming Paul Williams before another Jones cross was nearly put in to the net by Llanrwst’s Richard Orme but his misskicked clearance came back out off the woodwork before the ball was cleared by keeper Roberts.

Town then won a corner and as the ball was loose in the penalty box, the ball fell for Phil Lloyd but his effort flew over the bar before another free kick on the edge of the box saw Jones unable to give town the lead as his free kick flew wide of the post. Another corner saw the ball fall to Tom McElmeel but his shot went wide. Lloyd should have given town the lead a few minutes later after being put in by Jones but his chip went over the bar. Graeme Williams then looked on as another great cross into the box by Jones saw Williams’ header hit the post and to safety.

Llanrwst’s Matty Evans saw his shot go wide of Stanton’s post then much to the delight of the HalkynRoad faithful, Jones grabbed a late winner. Jones picked the ball up midway into Llanrwst’s half and ran and beat a couple of challenges before running into the box and his shot beat Paul Roberts with ease and the ball ended up in the roof of the net to give Town a deserved lead.

Elliott Llywelyn then had an overhead kick go wide before a quick break by the Wellmen saw Boylan run clear and his cross was cleared with Tony Roebuck in a dangerous position before another attacvk by the Wellmen saw Graeme Williams having his low shot parried out for a corner by Roberts.

The referee then blew for full time and a relieved Holywell Town were glad of picking up the three points and end 2013 with three points and back up to 2nd in the League.
