Town end up winners, despite finding it hard against a spirited Llandudno Junction Team.

Holywell Town welcomed bottom of the table Junction to Halkyn Road and were made to work hard for the victory against a depleated Junction side that had a few players missing through injuries and suspensions.

The game started brightly and Sam Jones went close with a well taken free kick before Ricky Jones had half a chance from a great cross by Alec Williams, but the ball went away from him at the last minute. Steve Thomas then went on a great run and skipped a couple of challenges but his shot was well saved by Liam Ewing in the goal for the visitors. Thomas went close again, shooting at goal from a Sam Jones corner but his effort was deflected out for a corner.

A few minutes later, Town had taken the lead. Paul Williams, who was having a great game crossed the ball across the face of the goal, and it beat a couple of defenders and fell to Sam Jones, who slotted the ball home, much to the delight of the home supporters. A bit later, Town had doubled their lead. Steve Thomas crossed the ball over towards Paul Williams, and his goal bound shot was deflected by Aaron Boyle and the ball beat Ewing and ended up in the back of the net.

With a few minutes left of the half, Tony Roebuck brought out a great save from Ewing who was forced to tip the ball over for a corner. With barely a minute remaining of the half, Llandudno Junction pulled one back. The ball was fed from midfield towards Alec Williams. He ran towards Holywell’s goal, and his shot beat the oncoming Danny Stanton to put the visitors back into the game.

The second half begun, and Town were fastest out of the blocks and any hope Junction had of equalising were dashed when Graham Boylan put Town further ahead with a well placed header. The Railwaymen’s heads didn’t drop and Stanton had to be alert a few minutes later to tip an Alec Williams shot onto the post and out for a corner. Boylan went close again a little later, sliding to get to the ball and his touch saw the ball go over the bar after a great cross in by Paul Williams. Still Jucntion weren’t giving up and sub Danny Jones was only a few inches wide with a great effort. The visitors then broke on the counter attack, and a brilliant run by Alec Williams saw him run in on goal and his cross was met by Ricky Jones but his shot was saved by Stanton.

Town seemed to weather the storm and Steve Thomas was only a few inches over with a shot, before Boylan could have done with a better touch in front of goal but his shot went over the bar. Back came Junction and Luke O’Mahoney had a shot deflected wide before an error by Stanton saw the ball fall kindly to Alan Davies, but a last ditch lunge by Steve Thomas saw Davies shot his Thomas’ legs and deflect back to safety.
Tony Roebuck saw a great shot go inches over, after great build up play by Graeme Williams then Luke O’Mahoney went close again but his shot was deflected over for a corner.

With barely a few minutes left on the clock, Town made sure of the win as a great ball in by Captain Paul Williams saw Dafydd Griffith rise well to head the ball home into the corner of the net, then Sub Luke Tyson beat a few challenges on the edge of the box and turned and shot and the ball made its way into the bottom corner of the net past Liam Ewing.

It was a much needed win for the Wellmen but the scoeline wasn’t a true reflection of the game as it was a lot closer that the scoeline suggested, and it won’t be long before Llandudno Junction pick up some points as their football tonight wasn’t that of a team who finds themselves on the bottom of the league. Town will be happy with all three points that will keep the pressure on Denbigh Town but it was a difficult game given the performance of the visiting team but Town grinded out the much needed win.
