Town put 8 past Llandyrnog United to record a gr-8 victory!

Llandyrnog United 1-8 Holywell Town
Town made the short journey over the border to Llandyrnog and the weather took a turn for the worse as kick off approached. The match kicked off and both teams tried to take control of the game which was difficult in the blistering conditions.
The Wellmen took the lead on 23 minutes, as Steve Thomas beat a couple of defenders on the right, before shooting and the ball beat the keeper via the side netting. A couple of minutes later, it was 2-0 as Paul Williams headed the ball home after a great cross by Graham Boylan. Sam Jones who was having a great game saw a shot brilliantly tipped over by Gareth Pope in the Llandyrnog goal. Sam then turned provider and his low cross was only a bit too hard for the Holywell frontline as all it needed was a touch and the ball would be in the back of the net.

Llandyrnog then went close as Daniel Jones had a shot which went wide before Steve Thomas had a great effort tipped over by Pope. Town didn’t have to wait too long for the third as Graham Boylan scored on 41 minutes, as he tapped in from a corner as the ball held up in the wind. Town then won a free kick on 44 minutes and Sam Jones stepped up to take it. Pope got a hand to his shot but it crept in to give Town a 4 goal lead on the stroke of half time. Llandyrnog didn’t help themselves as the half was just about to end as Pope saw red for headbutting Sam Jones and the referee had no alternative but to show the red card and send him off.

The second half began and being 4 goals behind and a man down, Llandyrnog had a mountain to climb but Town continued where they left off. The heavens opened again and a heavy downpour did not put a dampener on the game. Kicking down the hill, Sam Jones broke clear and beat a couple of challenges and he lay the ball off to Mark Orme who had to watch his shot come back out off the post and Boylan was on hand to fire in the rebound goalwards but he watched in horror as his shot came back out off the crossbar.

Llandyrnog’s Sion Davies whipped in a dangerous free kick which Boylan cleared to safety. Boylan was involved in Town’s 5th goal a few minutes later, back heeling a great cross in by Matty Roberts and Paul Williams was on hand to fire the ball home to claim his 2nd of the afternoon.

Town’s next attack brought the 6th goal as Sam Jones got his second of the game. Paul Williams passed the ball to him and as Sam broke goalwards, he skipped a couple of challenges before unleashing an unstoppable shot which gave the keeper no chance. 2 minutes later, Steve Thomas made it 7-0 then turned to celebrate with the Holywell supporters who were behind the goal Town were attacking.

Llandyrnog’s Liam Jones had a shot go wide before Town’s Luke Tyson whipped in a great cross but Boylan was just inches away from touching the ball into the net. Liam Jones then pulled one back for the hosts but a few minutes left of the half, Boylan completed the scoring. Both Sam Jones and Steve Thomas both had chances to increase Town’s lead but as the referee blew for full time, Town were more than happy with the result as and they will be confident going into next week’s Welsh Cup tie against Pe
