Town denied 3 points after late late goal by the hosts.

Llanrwst United 1-1 Holywell Town

Holywell Town travelled to Llanrwst looking for 3 points to keep the pressure on leaders Denbigh Town and confidence was high as kick off approached.

The first chance fell to the Wellmen as Paul Williams crossed the ball over well towards Jamie Jones, but his effort flew over the bar. A minute later, Aron Jones broke clear but his effort was saved well by Danny Stanton. Graham Boylan was next to get a chance to open the scoring, but his effort went over the bar after great work by Graeme Williams and Steve Thomas. Llanrwst next came close to scoring as a Ricky Jones cross was well met by Paul Cassidy, but his header flew over Stanton’s goal.

Town took the lead in the 23rd minute through Graham Boylan. Tom McElmeel picked up the ball deep in Town’s half and ran forward and beat a few challenges before laying the ball off to Boylan who beat his marker and his shot nestled into the bottom corner with goalkeeper Paul Roberts well beaten.

Town looked to add to their tally and a great ball into the box towards Graeme Williams’ head was looking good until he got pushed by keeper Roberts, and much to the annoyance of the Town supporters, the referee waved play on. Williams was once again in the thick of the action a few minutes later but his effort went over the bar. On the stroke of half time, Paul Williams was unclucky not to add to the tally as his deft chip over the oncoming Paul Roberts was only inches over the bar.

The second half started like the first had ended with Town trying to break down the Roosters back four, Boylan going inches wide from a great Paul Williams cross. A few minutes later, Steve Thomas was only a few inches away from connecting with the ball from a Paul Williams cross and a touch would have been enough o force the ball over the line.
Paul Roberts kept the Roosters in the game, saving well under the presence of Steve Thomas, who latched onto a great ball over the top from Jamie Jones before Roberts again saved from a McElmeel long range effort. Town began to press harder for the killer 2nd goal and with quarter of an hour to go, Jamie Jones had to watch as his effort hit the side netting. Llanrwst came back into the game and Paul Cassidy had an effort fly over the bar before a great shot by John o’Donovan was heading goal wards but Mark Orme was on hand to intercept the shot and the ball went out for a corner. From the resulting corner, Barry Calder was force to clear the ball off the line from a O’Donovan shot.
With a couple of minutes to go, Town were unlucky not to get the second, Roberts made a point blank save to deny Steve Thomas and the follow up was blasted over by Luke Tyson. Town were left to rue their missed chances a few minutes later as The Roosters equalised with 2 minutes on the clock. Aron Jones blasting a volley into the back of the net with Stanton beaten.

Tyson once again had to watch as his shot was somehow tipped over by Paul Roberts, saving well with another point blank effort then the referee blew to signal the end of the game. It was a great end to end game for the neutrals but was somewhat spoilt by the high winds which affected the game at times.
