Under the warm Spring sunshine, Holywell Town rounded off their season in style with an emphatic 6-0 win over Bodedern Athletic.

The game started and both teams defended well and hardly any chances fell to either team. Town could have taken the lead early on in the half through the penalty spot, but Steve Thomas saw Gareth ‘OJ’ Roberts save the kick. A few minutes later, Sam Jones thought he had scored but the Assistant waved his flag and the goal was not given as Jones was in an offside position.

Jones, Steve Thomas and Dave McCully al had chances but it wasn’t until the 38th minutes that the deadlock was finally broken. Town were awarded another penalty and Steve Thomas stepped up to take and made amends for his earlier miss as he struck the ball into the back of the net to give Town a first half lead.

Sam Jones was giving the defence allsorts of trouble and his cross in the 49th minute found Thomas in a good position but he was deemed to be offside. Another Jones cross to Gunther gave Town the chance but his effort went wide. A few minutes later however, Gunther got Town’s second, running on to an inch perfect ball from Sam Jones and beat ‘OJ’ to double Town’s lead. A couple of minutes later it was 3-0 as Iwan Jones brought down Sam Jones inside the box and up stepped John Haseliden to send the keeper the wrong way. This was no more than Town deserved.

Bodedern had a rare chance on goal in the 69th minute as an Iwan Jones free kick was brilliantly saved by Danny Stanton. Sam Jones then went close, his shot crept inches wide past the post. A great Town move set up the goal. Tony Roebuck lay the ball off to Dave McCully, who fired home to ensure the points were won with 10 minutes remaining. Ashley Durham made it 5-0 on 83 minutes, firing home past the keeper in a crowded area before Steve Thomas got his second and Town’s 6th of the afternoon, having to only just tap the ball into an empty net after a great move involving Gunther who crossed the ball to Thomas who made no mistake in front of goal.

As the referee blew for full time, Town were given a round of applause by the Holywell Town faithful in the stands for what has been an excellent season and roll on next season! The result meant that Town also scored 98 league goals this season which is an excellent total by anyone’s standards
