Town pick up point at Llanrug

Llanrug United 2-2 Holywell Town

Holywell Town travelled to Llanrug as Holywell’s Halkyn Road was still under a few inches of snow, so Llanrug agreed to the switch so to get the game on.

Town opened the brightly and played some good football kicking upfield and with 14 minutes on the clock, Town had the first real chance as Graeme Williams saw his shot saved by the Llanrug keeper. The next real chance once again fell to Town, as a break from midfield saw Steve Thomas with space and he ran at the defence and unleashed a shot which went wide with the keeper well beaten.

Matty Roberts had a shot go inches wide before Llanrug had a good effort themselves as Jamie Whitmaore had a shot saved well by Dave Walsh in between the sticks for the Wellmen. This spurred the hosts on and Walsh was called into action again before Llanrug took the lead on the stroke of half time through Jamie Whitmore.

Town came out after the break and knew that they would have to dig a little deeper to break down the Llanrug rearguard. The breakthrough came in the 53rd minute through Marc Gunther. Town won a free kick just outside the box and Steve Thomas delivered a great ball into the box and Mark Orme headed the ball back into the box, and Marc Gunther was on hand to poke the ball home.

About 10 minutes later, Town were ahead. The Wellmen won a free kick in a dangerous position and Steve Thomas hit a superb shot which flew into the top corner which gave the keeper no chance. It was a goal worthy of winning any match but Llanrug were level just over 5 minutes later.

The ball fell kindly for Gareth Eifion Jones and he saw that Walsh was off his line and hit an inch perfect shot in on goal and it fell over Walsh to level the scores. Town went looking for the winner, with Gunther and Ian Griffiths going close but the scores remained 2-2 at full time.
