Wellmen fire 7 past Llangefni

Llangefni Town 1-7 Holywell Town

Holywell Town travelled to Anglesey looking for 3 points in the wake of Wednesday’s disappointing draw against Gwlachmai. Town didn’t have to wait long for the breakthrough. Sam Jones got the ball to the feet of Steve Thomas who beat a couple of defenders before crossing the ball to Graham Boylan who rifled the ball home to score his first goal for Holywell since his deadline day signing from Porthmadog.

It was all Holywell by now, and Steve Thomas released the ball to John Shepherd who couldn’t get his cross in, then moments later, Sam Jones should have done better but his shot went wide of the target and Steve Thomas saw his shot fly over the bar. On the quarter of an hour mark, Town should have added a second as Sam Jones was put in by Graeme Williams, but his shot was saved by Liam Ewing in the Llangefni goal, and Boylan followed up but had to watch as his effort bounced over the bar. Next it was Graeme Williams to have a shot but Ewing was down well to save near to the right hand post.

Llangefni then had a couple of chances, the best falling to Kieren Lewis who’s shot as saved by Danny Stanton. A few minutes later however, Llangenfi had equalised through Gareth John Hughes, who turned and sent a looping shot over towards goal and unfortunate for Town, flew over Danny Stanton and nestled in the bottom corner of his goal. Sam Jones and Steve Thomas both went close for Town to restore the lead but both efforts missed the target and the scored remained 1-1 at half time.

Town came out for the second half and took the game to Llangefni. The half was only a minute old when Steve Thomas put the ball in the net after a Sam Jones shot was only parried away by the keeper and Steve tapped in the rebound, but the linesman had other ideas and raised his flag for offside. A minute later, Paul Williams had a shot saved well again by Ewing before Town took the lead a few minutes later. John Shepherd, who was having a great game, picked the ball up deep in the Holywell half, and ran down the pitch and rode the challenges of a couple of defenders. The last challenge took a nasty bounce but fell kindly for John, who ran on into the box with the ball before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner and the Wellmen were back in front.

This gave Town the perfect start to the second half, and a minute or so later, the game was put to bed as a great ball over to Roebuck saw him swivel in mid air and hit a sweet volley which flew into the net with the keeper well beaten! 10 minutes later, it was 4-1 as Matty Roberts picked the ball up deep on the left hand side, before sending over a great low cross and Sam Jones tapped the ball home near the far post. Shepherd should have made it 5-1 a few minutes later, as another good cross by Roberts saw Shepherd waiting at the far post but he didn’t expect the ball to reach him through the crowded area and he was caught unaware and his touch of the ball trickled inches wide of the post.
Another Free kick into the box beat everyone and Mark Orme and Graeme Williams were waiting but Orme’s snap shot failed to hit the target. Steve Thomas had a shot go over before Boylan added his second of the game, steering the ball home after a great cross over by Graeme Williams. On 75 minutes, it was 6-1, as Boylan completed his hat trick, as a great run from Matty Roberts saw him hit a great shot at the keeper who could only parry the ball, and Boylan was rushing on and was literally left with an open goal to grab his hat – trick. Boylan rounded the scoring with roughly 10 minutes to go as he followed up another shot that was only parried by the keeper. There was still time for Steve Thomas to fire over and Sam Jones had a shot hit the crossbar and bounce back into play and into safely. There was no stopping Town this afternoon and there could have been a few more with better finishing front of goal.

Next week see’s Holywell entertain Nefyn at Halkyn Road, fresh on the heals of their recent 10-0 drubbing by the Wellmen and with Caernarfon and Denbigh both picking up points today, it was important that we got something out of the game to keep in touch with those above us.
