Town drop 2 points at Home to Gwlachmai

Holywell Town 4-4 Gwalchmai

After the hard work of getting the pitch playable for tonight’s game, Town will feel disappointed to drop 2 points after a 4-4 draw with Gwalchmai.

The game began and Holywell Town started the brightest of the two teams and with barely a minute on the clock, the Gwalchmai keeper was forced to save well with his legs from Ian Griffiths’ shot. A few minutes later, Tom Carney had a shot go wide after a good run on the right before Carney again caused trouble for the visiting defence and won Town a corner. From the corner, the ball reached Steve Thomas who guided the ball back into the box, and Mark Orme was the first to react and his near post header went in to give Town a deserved lead.
A few minutes later, it was 2-0. Steve Thomas was given space to run at the defenders and he beat the challenge of one of them to give himself some space then unleashed a shot which flew into the top corner with the keeper beaten.

Gwalchmai then got into the game and had a couple of half chances before Paul Williams saved Town with a clearance after pressure in the box by the visitors. A minute or so later, goalkeeper David Walsh made an excellent save, tipping the ball over from Mark Evans’ shot but disaster struck for Town a few minutes later as Gwalchmai pulled one back through Mark Evans.

Town restored their two goal lead on the half hour mark as Steve Thomas got his second of the game, slotting the ball home past Kenny Hughes after being set up by new signing Graham Boylan. Gwalchmai’s Andrew Sinclair had a header go over the bar before Ian Griffiths thought he had won a penalty for Town after he was brought down by the referee waved play on and Town went in at the break 3 goals to 1 up.

Town came out for the second half and the half was only a few minutes old when Orme added his second of the game and Town’s fourth. A corner from the left was only half cleared by the defence and Orme was on hand to shoot the ball home into the roof of the net with the keeper well beaten. A few minutes later however, Gwalchmai got their second of the game through Mark Griffiths to make it 4-2. It was all Gwalchmai by now and they got their third on the hour mark through Mark Evans.

Barry Calder was brought down in the box but no penalty was given before Boylan very nearly opened his Holywell Town account but Hughes once again saved well with his legs. Tony Roebuck had a shot go over before Mark Griffiths shot wide for the visitors. Town were fortunate a few minutes later as Mark Evans was running in on goal but he shot over with only the keeper to beat. Steve Thomas was brought down when running towards goal and won a free kick which came to nothing and Calder was really unlucky when his first time volley flew inches wide of Hughes’ left post.

Town thought they had hung on to the 3 points but Gwlachmai had other ideas, and in injury time, they got the equaliser when Craig Evans fired home after the loose ball fell to him when Town failed to clear the ball up-field. It was a disappointing result for Holywell who must now forget about their second half performance and concentrate on beating Llangefni on Saturday.
