Holywell Town in 7th Heaven after emphatic 7-0 win over Glnatraeth

Holywell Town v Glantraeth

Holywell Town entertained Anglesey visitors Glantraeth to Halkyn Road and the Wellmen were hoping for another home victory after last week’s victory over Glan Conwy.

The game was barely 2 minutes old when Town took the lead. Marc Gunther collected the ball on the right and his cross was met by Tom Carney, who’s overhead kick beat Mike Innes in the Glantraeth goal. A couple of minutes later, Carney got his and Town’s second, as his shot again found the back of the net to set the Wellmen on their way!

Ian Griffiths and Marc Gunther both looked to add to the tally but their efforts didn’t hit the target but Town got their 3rd on 27 minutes when Carney completed his hat trick. Gunther again provided a great cross across the face of the goal, and it reached the unmarked Carney who slotted home to complete his hat trick. Holywell were on fire and playing brilliant football and it wasn’t long before they added to their tally. Paul Williams’ saw his shot beat Innes to give town a four goal lead. Glantraeth had their first effort on goal a few minutes before the break, Anthony Hughes having half a chance but he couldn’t get his shot in on goal.

As the teams came back out for the second half, Glantraeth wondered if there was any way back and any hopes they may have had were dashed a couple of minutes into the half as Marc Gunther headed in from a Tony Roebuck cross. Holywell were full of confidence and Carney played Tony Roebuck in but his shot went wide of the target.

Glantraeth’s Mathew Lock had a chance to get on the scoresheet but his header flew over the bar and Kevin Roberts also saw his shot go over the bar. A few minutes later, Graeme Williams had a shot which flew over the bar. A Glantraeth Defender passed the ball back to Innes who lost possession of the ball to Ian Griffiths. He passed across towards Tom Carney but a defender cleared the ball to thwart the danger.

Town added a 6th on 65 minutes, Graeme Williams was put through by Griffiths and his shot beat the keeper to make it 6-0. There was definitely no way back now for Glantraeth and Holywell still pressed to get more goals but chances went begging. Gunther rounded off the scoring on 86 minutes when he was put through by Paul Williams and the goal to make it 7-0 capped a miserable afternoon for Glantraeth.

It was a great performance by the Wellmen and we are now looking forward to next week’s Welsh Cup tie against Llanfairpwll.
