The Wellmen claim first home victory of the Season.

Holywell Town 1-0 Glan Conwy

Friday night football returned to Halkyn Road as the Wellmen faced Glan Conwy.

From kick off, Town looked to carry on from where they left off against Llanrwst United a few days earlier and the first chance fell to Holywell on 7 minutes as Graham Williams shot which went wide. A few minutes later, Marc Gunther brought out a good save from Paul Davies in the visitors goal. Gunther again had a shot saved a few minutes later before Glan Conwy had their first real chance on goal when Eric Wright’s effort went over Danny Stanton’s cross bar.

On the half hour mark, Town went close again when Steve Thomas, Tony Roebuck and Gunther all had chances blocked after a goal mouth scramble following a corner then Ryan Davies had to make a great tackle to get the ball off Glan Conwy’s Brad Jones as he had slipped his marker and was running towards goal. Ryan again was in the thick of the action a few minutes later when he had to watch Pau Davies parry out his stunning free kick but the ball fell to a Glan Conwy defender who cleared the ball down field. On the stroke of half time, Gunther had a shot which was deflected out for a corner but nothing came out of it and the teams went in for their half time drink, neither team had broken the deadlock.

The opening few minutes of the 2nd half saw efforts by Graham Williams and Steve Thomas for the Wellmen, Williams watched in horror as his shot came back off the post whilst Thomas’ shot went inches wide. Holywell looked the more likely to score as the game went on and Danny Sullivan was only inches away from connecting with a Steve Thomas cross.

Glan Conwy nearly scored against the run of play a few minutes later, Danny Stanton making a remarkable save to prevent Liam Griffiths giving the visitors the lead. Marc Gunther then had a another effort go over the bar before Tony Roebuck passed through the defence for Paul Williams to chase before his shot was deflected out for a corner. A minute later though, Town took the lead as recent signing Ian Griffiths scored his first goal for the club. Griffiths managed to connect with the ball to force it over the keeper, a goal the Wellmen more than deserved.

This gave Town the impetus to look for another and another great through ball by Steve Thomas to Danny Sullivan but the striker’s shot went inches wide. With a few minutes remaning, Glan’s Chris Littler headed wide and Jake Walker saw his effort go wide of the target and that was the visitors last effort of the night. Town were denied a penalty as Ian Griffiths was challenged inside the box but he managed to keep his balance to square the ball to Thomas who crossed for Tom Carney but his shot went over the crossbar. Many said if Griffiths would have gone down under the challenge, it would have been a blatant penalty but to give him credit he played on. Griffiths had one more effort go over the bar before the referee blew for full time and it was 2 wins out of 2 for the wellmen for the week!
