Late goal costs the Wellmen a point

Holywell Town 1-2 Llanberis.

Both teams came into today’s game full of confidence after good league wins in midweek and the first chance fell to Holywell Town after only 2 Minutes. A free kick was won just outside the box and Wayne Edwards took the kick. The ball hit the post with the keeper well beaten, and Edwards picked the ball up again and struck a shot which again came back off the post and the ball was put out for a corner.

Holywell were all over the visitors with new signing Ian Griffiths having a shot saved before Edwards once again went close as his chip over the keeper this time hit the bar and out for a goal kick.

On the half hour mark, Llanberis took the lead. Rhys Parry won the ball and broke clear towards the Wellmen’s goal, he crossed to David Jones who made no mistake to give the visitors a surprise lead.

Holywell went looking for the equaliser and Ian Griffiths went close on 35 minutes but the keeper parried his shot to safety before Town lost debutant Barry Calder with an injury and he was replaced with Tom Povey. Tony Roebuck rode a few tackles before shooting but his shot went over the bar and as the teams went off at half time, it was Llanberis who held the advantage with their one goal lead.

The teams came out for the second half and both teams had chances to score but none were taken. Holywell’s next real chance came just before the hour mark, Matty Roberts corssed the ball to Paul Williams, his shot was brilliantly saved by Louis Williams in the Llanberis goal who pushed the ball away and Danny Sullivan was only inches away to tap in the follow up. Holywell were then denied a penalty after a blatant handball by Llanberis’ Gethin Maxwell.

David Jones brought out a great save from Danny Stanton before Llanberis had a goal disallowed. David Jones knocked the ball into the net but linesman Dean Morris had his flag up as a Llanberis player was in an offside position when Jones shot towards goal. Steve Thomas then replaced Ian Griffiths and he was soon in the thick of the action. He beat Tomos Owen and crossed the ball to Wayne Edwards, who passed the ball to Paul Williams but his shot clipped the crossbar and went out for a goal kick. Edwards then saw his shot brilliantly saved by Williams inbetween the sticks for Llanberis then Sullivan had to watch as Williams saved brilliantly from his shot. The pressure soon paid off and on 82 minutes, Town levelled the scoring. Steve Thomas crossed the ball across the face of the goal, and Sullivan was on hand to tap the ball in.

Town then sensed they could get a late winner. Edwards going close from a great cross by Tom Povey and Williams was only inches wide with a shot. Llanberis then went up the other end and Jones again had a great effort which was only inches over the bar. But disaster struck a few minutes later when danger man Jones, who was worthy of their man of the match award struck a sweet shot which beat Stanton to give the visitors the lead.

With time running out, Town looked for the equaliser as Edwards and Thomas both had half chances but the referee blew the whistle and Town suffered their second home defeat of the season. Llanberis made it 2 out of 2 for the season and the S4C camera’s who were filming the match for their forthcoming fly on the wall documentary series would have enjoyed that game. Town must now get the result out of their system and bounce back on Tuesday night against Llanrwst United.
