The Wellmen fall to defeat in opening game of the season.

Holywell Town v Ruthin Town

Ruthin get the game underway, kicking towards the Town End. Ruthin win an early free kick and the ball is lofted into the area but debut at goalkeeper Andy Metcalf gathers the ball well. Town then go on the attack and a low ball into the box finds Matthew Harvey, but his placed effort is saved by keeper Ryan Goldston.
Town press forward and win a corner, Sam Jones ball into the box is headed goalwards but goes out for a goalkick. Ruthin get the next attack, Ryan Jones turning well in the box and gets to the byline and his cross is headed clear but only as far as another Ruthin player and his pass into the box is cleared by Sam Jones.
Disaster for Town as Ruthin take the lead in the 12th minute. A ball through the Town defence beats the offside trap and Ryan Jones runs forward and slots the ball past Andy Metcalf to give the visitors the lead. Town then look for the equaliser, and a few minutes later, a good move sees the ball fall to Connor Littler on the edge of the box, he turns but his shot goes over the bar. Then, in the next attack, Matthew Kendrick fires in a low shot but the keeper saves well. The next attack falls to Ruthin Town, but Gwion Owen fires over when in a good position inside the penalty area.
Ruthin Town extend their lead in the 26th minute, when a move towards the Wellmen goal see’s Ryan Jones picking up the ball, and he runs along the edge of the area and turns and shoots past Metcalf to increase Ruthin’s lead. With half an hour on the clock, Town win a free kick and Sam Jones’ free kick is only a few inches over the bar. A tackle by Sam Jones on a Ruthin player see’s him get a yellow card, and from the resulting free kick comes to nothing.
Ruthin Town pile more misery on the Wellmen in the 37th minute, when Gwion Owen fires past Metcalf. Town then win a free kick on the edge of the box and Damien Ketley’s effort is saved well by Ryan Goldston who parries the ball away. Gwydion Ifan then fires over in the last attack of the half.
Half Time: Holywell Town 0-3 Ruthin Town
Ruthin have the first chance of the second half but Metcalf saves easily, then Wellmen go the other end and a low ball in by Cole sees the Ruthin defence clear for a corner, and from the corner, Matty Harvey header goal wards is cleared out towards the touchline. Ruthin’s Ryan Jones then breaks clear and a great last ditch tackle by Harvey prevents him getting his shot in, and from the corner, Town break well with Paul Williams releasing Damien Ketley, and his run into the box see’s him felled by Ruthin’s Kevin Evans but the referee waves away his appeals for a penalty.
Wellmen press forward looking for the goal and a good move see’s Ketley released and his run forward sees his cross just a bit too high for the on rushing Lee Davey. Gwion Owen then has a shot which goes wide. Jack Pennington then replaces Aidy Roxburgh and Wellmen have a spell of pressure, looking for a goal to possibly get something out of the game, with Davey having a shot which was deflected over for a corner, and Ketley heads wide.
Metcalf then produces a great save getting down low to save at the feet of Will Owen to prevent him increasing the lead, then up the other end, a good move see’s Cole get to the byline and his cross into the box see’s Davey get a shot in which goes wide. Marc Gunther then replaces Davey and nearly makes an immediate impact as he has a shot which keeper Goldston saves well. Sam Jones then lofts a ball into the box and Goldston gathers with Ketley threatening. Sam Jones then has an effort from outside the box and the keeper gathers at the second attempt with Ketley lurking for the loose ball. Jack Pennington then goes on a great run, beating a couple of Ruthin players and his lay off to Sam Jones see’s Jones powerful shot goalwards hits Ketley then Ruthin clear the ball to safety. IN the dying minutes, Ruthin’s Gwion Owen thought he had scored Ruthin’s 4th but his shot came back out of one post, to the other before Metcalf gathers. Sam Jones then hits a great free kick into the box but Goldston gathers. Next attack, Sam Jones finds himself in front of goal but his shot goes wide of the post in what turned out to be the final shot of the half.
