Rhyl 3-1 Holywell Town

The Wellmen fall to defeat in last game of 2017l

The first half started with Rhyl having the first attack, Danny Holland broke down the right and his low cross was gathered well by Shaun Pearson in the Wellmen goal. Town were next to have a good chance, Graeme Williams intercepted the ball and fed the ball through to Steve Lewis, but his shot went wide of the goal and out for a goal kick. Rhyl won a free kick and the perfectly lobbed ball into the box saw James Brewerton head the ball goalwards but Pearson caught the ball well.

Sam Jones then fed the ball through for Lewis to chase, but Rory Crowther in the Rhyl goal ran out and cleared the ball before Lewis got to it. The Wellmen then had the ball in the net but the referee disallowed it for a foul on the keeper. Town then had another chance when Lewis passed to Steve Thomas who’s pass across face of goal was cleared, but only as far as Mark Winslade but his shot was cleared to safety by the Rhyl defence. Town then broke well, clearing their lines from a Rhyl corner and Thomas went on a run, beating the challenges of a couple of defenders before passing to Lewis, but his shot went wide in what was Town’s best chance of the half. Town’s last chance of the half came a minute or so before the break, when Paul Williams headed wide from a Steve Thomas free kick.

With the Wellmen getting the best of the first half, Rhyl changed tactics and Mark Connolly introduced Alex Titichiner and the sub made an immediate imact, as he picked up the ball on the edge of the box, turned and fired a low shot into the bottom corner to give the hosts the lead. A few minutes later, Rhyl had doubled their lead when player manager Mark Connolly headed home from close range to stun the Wellmen.

Sam Jones then had a shot charged down before Rhyl had a good chance as Pearson saved well from Connolly. Steve Lewis then won a penalty for the Wellmen after he was brought down in the area by Tony Davies and Sam Jones blasted the penalty home to reduce the arrears. The goal lifted the Wellmen and a few minutes later, a good move saw Lewis fire in a shot which goalkeeper Rory Crowther saved well to keep his side ahead in the game.

With Town mounting pressure on the Rhyl goal, a break a few minutes from time saw Titchiner rush forward towards the Wellmen goal and his shot beat Shaun Pearson to claim the victory for the home side.
