The Wellmen claim victory in big local derby

The Wellmen travelled to Cae y Castell, home of local rivals Flint Town United looking to put last season’s disappointing defeat behind them to claim another victory for the season.

The game started with Flint Town putting on the early pressure and after 8 minutes, Andy Brown’s shot came back off the post with John Rushton beaten. Again the home side pressed and had couple of shots which didn’t trouble the Wellmen’s rear guard, but that was broken on 18 minutes as James Hooper put the home side ahead, getting on the end of a long throw in by Brown and steered the ball past Rushton.

Rushton produced a great one handed save a few minutes later to deny Hooper getting his second of the game and as the half continued, the Wellmen began to take control of the game. A few minutes before the break, the Wellmen equalised. A good interchange between Paul Williams and Steve Thomas saw Thomas cut inside the Flint defender, before hitting an unstoppable shot past Ben Jones’ near post to level the scores, much to the delight of the Holywell supporters.

Following the break, the Wellmen came out and after a few minutes, the ball fell to Graeme Williams on the edge of the box, but his shot was dragged past the post. 10 minutes into the half however, the Wellmen took the lead.

The Wellmen won a free kick, just inside the Flint Town half, and Steve Thomas’ lofted ball into the box was headed clear by the defence, but the ball fell to Lee Emberton who controlled well, before hitting a low shot thorough the crowded area and the ball nestled into the bottom corner of the net (pictured), and Lee wheeled away to celebrate with the Holywell Town supporters congregated behind that goal!.
Town’s defence had to be alert a few minutes later as Matty Harvey cleared off the line before John Rushton gathered the ball to safety. The home side looked to get back onto level terms, but despite their best efforts and pressure, the Wellmen held firm and remained in the lead with the clock ticking ever closer to the 90 minutes. Nial Dawson then had a good shot saved by Rushton, before Ryan Davidson brought out a good save from Jones with the clock reaching 90 minutes.

With the final real effort of the half falling on 92 minutes, Flint’s James Hooper should have done better but his shot went high and wide of Rushton’s goal. Referee Tom Owen then blew for full time and the Wellmen supporters clapped their heroes off the pitch before leaving Cae y Castell in joyous mood after the victory over our local rivals!
