Late goal denies the Wellmen all three points

Holywell met recently promoted Penrhyncoch on a warm afternoon in front of a good crowd who hope to see the Wellmen continue their unbeaten start to the season.

The first half started in a cagey manner with both teams weighing each other up. Holywell’s first chance fell to Graeme Williams in the 11 minutes who was put through in the penalty area following a great run down the right wing by Phil Lloyd but his shot went wide. In the 17th minute Luke Wandlass found himself at the end of a great sweeping move from the Wellmen but his excellent shot went just over the bar. Holywell were now dominating their opponents and the chances were plentiful. However Penrhyncoch were always dangerous on the break and on the half hour mark Roosters midfielder Antonio Corbiserio shot wide after being put through one on one with Wellmen keeper Jon Rushton. As the half concluded Phil Lloyd, Paul Williams and Graeme Williams all had further chances to take the lead for the Wellmen but either hit the crossbar or were narrowly wide. Penrhyncoch would have been relieved to make it to half time still level.

The second half started in a similar vein with the Wellmen attacking their visitors and in the 49th minute the home side took a deserved lead. A dangerous free kick was fired into the Roosters penalty area by Ryan Davidson, who was having a great game, and as Roosters centre back Jon Foligno attempted to head it clear under pressure, he headed the ball into his own net, giving the Wellmen a deserved lead. The goal galvanised the home side further and were now opening up the visitors at will and in the 55th minute Paul Williams hit the crossbar after another great team move by the home side. As the half moved on and the score remained at 1-0, Penrhyncoch started to come back into the game and started to win free kicks in dangerous positions in the home side half. A free kick in the 80th minute was well blocked by Gareth Sudlow and the visitors started to frustrate the home side and things threatened to boil over. In the 86th minute the visitors drew level through Dylan James following a goal mouth scramble. Not to be deterred the Wellmen continued to attack and manager John Haseldin through on substitutes Sam Jones and Mark Bridge in an attempt to full the game back. The tactic nearly worked perfectly in the final minute after a trademark run by Sam Jones down the left wing he was challenged in the penalty area by a Penrhyncoch defender and the whole ground appealed for a penalty but the referee waved play on. It certainly looked like a penalty from the press box.

The final whistle then went with Penrhyncoch celebrating gaining a point from Holywell with the home side ruing missed chances in an otherwise excellent performance. On this form and with the side created numerous chances, some team will be on the end of a score line hiding at the hands of the Wellmen soon.
