.The Wellmen travelled to Holyhead looking to build on last week's win at home to Gresford Athletic, and returned back to Holywell with a point after battling out a 0-0 draw.
The game was dominated by the weather, and the first half kicked off with the Wellmen playing into the high wind. Both sides tried to play football and any ball kicked high was held up in the strong gusts of wind. The first real chance fell to the home side after 20 minutes, when Peter Jones has a shot blocked inside the Wellmen’s penalty area.
Later in the half, Holyhead broke clear and Mel McGuiness ran goalwards but was matched by Matty Harvey, and Harvey’s last ditch tackle saved the Wellmen from going behind. Holyhead piled on the pressure, knowing that there was only a few minutes remaining of them having the advantage of the wind behind them, and Peter Jones had a shot go wide before Dean Garney had the last chance of the half but fired wide of John Rushton’s post.
The second half started with again both sides trying to control the game in the high wind and Holyhead’s Peter Jones again broke clear and ran in on goal, but he watched as Gareth Sudlow managed a sliding block as his shot flew goalwards.
The Wellmen introduced Ryan Davidson onto the pitch inplace of Mark Bridge, and from a good Ross Ankers free kick, Davidson got his head to the ball first and headed narrowly over, but the assistants flag was up and the chance had gone. McGuiness up the other end of the pitch ran at the Wellmen’s defence but the ball seemed to stick under his feet and he lost control with only the keeper to beat.
The Wellmen brought on Paul Williams and Phil Lloyd, hoping for a repeat of last week when Sub Lloyd scored with his first touch of the ball. James Graham had a shot go narrowly over and a minute later, Graham thought he had scored a late winner, his effort beating Paul Pritchard in the home side’s goal but the assistant had his flag up for offside. With one of the last kicks of the half, Luke Wandless thread the ball over the top towards Phil Lloyd who was on his own inside the box, he stuck up a leg ready to volley the ball home but he was unable to control it and the ball went out for a goal kick.
The referee blew for full time and both teams shared the spoils with a point each, which means the Wellmen remain unbeaten after 2 games of the new season, and Town will be looking to build on that next week at home to Penrhyncoch.
