Holywell Town welcomed Llanfair United to Halkyn Road, as the Wellmen looked to get back to winning ways after Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Cefn Druids

The visitors got the best of the early exchanges, and they seemed the most likely to score. Centre Forward James Davies getting a few chances in on the Holywell Town goal. Town were lacking their usual play, and with around half hour played on the clock, Brady Mcgilloway forced his way past a defender to get a shot in on goal which keeper Steffan Jones gathered well.

Llanfair then came closest to scoring, a break from midfield saw captain Paul Griffiths through on goal, he rounded the advancing Mike Platt and his shot came back off the post and Lee Emberton was able to clear. That was a big let off for the Wellmen, but a few minutes later, the visitors had taken the lead. A good ball through from midfield saw James Davies in on goal, and Platt was able to get a hand to the shot but the power of the shot took the ball into the net to give the visitors the lead.

The Wellmen went in at the break a goal down knowing they had a lot to play for in the second half as they went in search of the equaliser. Town started brightly, a Tom Rowlands run to the edge of the box saw him cross the ball towards Phil Lloyd, but he was unable to connect with the ball, before Rowlands again was involved in the action, as he ran and beat his marker, before turning and shooting but the ball flew just wide of Steffan Jones’ post.

Town were slowly getting back into the game, and just after the hour mark, they got the equaliser. Town won a free kick on the left hand side, just inside the Llanfair half, Steve Thomas whipped in the cross towards Phil Lloyd who connected well with the ball, and his shot flew through the hands of the keeper and the ball trickled into the net. As Town pressed forward looking to add to their tally, James Davies had a shot on the volley towards the Town goal, and Mike Platt was forced into a great save as he tipped the ball over for a corner, which resulted in Platt gathering the ball well.

Town’s Paul Williams then got in a great cross towards the far post, where Graeme Williams headed the ball back into the centre, and Phil Lloyd was only inches wide of the post as his hooked effort fell just the wrong side of the post. Town shortly after wards took the lead. A easy ball back towards Robert Bennett saw the Llanfair defender slip and the ball flew past him where Connor Littler picked up the ball to run goalwards; his shot beating the advancing Steffan Jones to give town the lead.

Phil Lloyd then broke clear and his attempt to get the ball past the keeper again at the far post saw a defender clear the ball well, then a good run by Paul Williams saw him enter the box. Before laying the ball to Phil Lloyd who returned the ball to Williams, but his turn and shot flew above Jones’ crossbar.

The last couple of chances fell to Llanfair, as Luke Gethin watched as his shot flew over the bar, and Matthew Bumford made space for himself from his marker but his shot also went over the bar. The referee blew for full time and despite it not being pretty, Town were glad of the 3 points, and all eyes now turn to Saturday’s game against Caersws.
