Holywell Town fall to defeat against Caersws

Holywell Town welcomed Caersws to Halkyn Road, as the visitors were fighting for points in their quest for Huws Gray Alliance survival. The visitors have picked up a few points of late so we knew it wouldn’t be an easy game.

The match kicked off and both teams looked to get a hold of the game, with both sides creating chances but nothing to really test either keeper. It was with the first chance that Caersws took the lead. (No 8) put in a cross into the box and the ball deflected off Dafydd Griffith into the path of Mark Griffiths who fired the ball past Mike Platt to give the visitors the lead.

From the kick off, Town pressed looking for a quick equalizer and a ball over the top found Graeme Williams but his effort was blocked by the Caersws centre back. Unfortunately, a minute or so later, the visitors increased their lead. A good ball from midfield split the Town defence and (no.10) raced clear with the ball, and struck a powerful shot past the advancing Platt.

Town now had a mountain to climb, and Phil Lloyd was put through to chase a through ball but the ball was just a little too quick for Lloyd to get on the end of it. Graeme Williams was then fouled just outside the box, and Steve Thomas stepped up to take the kick, and instead of the anticipated ball to the far post, he played it short to Brady McGilloway who burst forward but his low cross was cleared before reaching anyone in the red and white shirt.

Caersws then had a couple of chances to put the game to bed, a corner from the right saw the ball fall to (no.7) who’s shot was saved by Platt’s feet, then a monute later, (no.9) was put through and in a one on one position with Platt, his shot was saved by the keeper and everyone bar those connected with Caersws breathed a sigh of relief was glad to hear the referee’s whistle for half time.

Town had it all to do in the second half, and the Wellmen started brightly. Another Steve Thomas corner over into the box found the ball drop to Lloyd who’s header was cleared off the line at the far post, but only as far as Graeme Williams, and in the goalmouth scramble that ensued, Williams was unable to get a good shot in and the ball was deflected out to safety. Platt was once again called into action, saving well from (no10) and injured himself in the process and needed medical attention.

Plat was ok to carry on, and just short of the hour mark, Caersws had the ball in the back of the net but the goal was disallowed for offside, then just after the hour mark (no.11) fired the ball over the crossbar. Another good ball through saw (no 3) have an effort go wide. Town still pressed for a goal to put them back in the game, and a good cross in from Brady McGilloway saw Connor Littler header go inches wide of the post.

Player Manager John Haseldin came on and got on the end of a Steve Thomas cross but the keeper saved the ball in what was Town’s last chance of the game. The Wellmen were definitely below par against Caersws, but take nothing away from the visitors, they deserved the win and 3 more points in their fight for Huws Gray League survival.
