The Wellmen run out 4-0 winners against our near neighbours.

The Wellmen welcomed our near neighbours Mold Alex to Halkyn Road, as the Wellmen aimed to do the hat-trick over Alex having already beaten them in the League and in the League Cup at Alyn Park earlier in the season.

The opening exchanges saw the visitors the stronger side. A corner from the right fell to Connor Ready, whose header goalwards was going in but Lee Emberton was able to clear off the line with his head, and Ready had a shot a few minutes later which Dafydd Griffith was able to block with his legs. Mold piled on more pressure on the Wellmen goal, with Thomas Murray having a shot which flew wide of Mike Platt’s goal.

Town’s first real chance fell on 20 minutes. A great move from midfield saw Paul D Williams pass the ball through defence for Phil Lloyd to chase, and his neat lay off saw Tony Roebuck’s shot go high over Michael Jones’ goal. Town got back into the game and began to play the football we are used to see, and the Wellmen took the lead shortly afterwards through Dafydd Griffith. A Town corner was only partially cleared and the ball fell to Lee Emberton, who’s shot was blocked by the Mold keeper, but only as far as Dafydd Griffith who fired home the loose ball to give the Wellmen the lead.

The heavens then opened and a spell of heavy rain and strong winds like a monsoon created puddles on the pitch, which made it difficult to play our normal passing game. The score remained 1-0 to the Wellmen at the break and we were all glad to see the storm pass over, which enabled the groundstaff to get at the pitch at half time with their forks to get rid of the surface water which had formed after the heavy downpour.

The referee was happy with the condition of the pitch and the game got underway and shortly afterwards, the Wellmen had doubled their lead. A great run by Graeme Williams saw him skip past the defenders challenge, cross the ball to Phil Lloyd who fired home to double the Wellmen’s lead. Mold then won a free kick on the edge of the box, but the free kick flew inches wide of Mike Platt’s post.

The Wellmen then took control of the game and were playing excellent football on the atrocious playing surface, and with an hour on the clock, the Wellmen killed the game off by adding a third. Tony Roebuck switched the ball to the left, where Brady McGilloway was waiting and he ran on towards goal, he switched the ball over to the centre and Connor Littler had an effort saved by Jones, but the ball fell towards Brady McGilloway (pictured above) who was able to fire the ball home despite the last gasp slide of Danny Dalton’s to block the shot.

Phil Lloyd, who was having a great game, managed to cross the ball towards Graeme Williams but his shot was blocked without testing the keeper then Town got their 4th goal of the Afternoon. Brady McGilloway once again picked up the ball and ran at the Mold defence, his run outpaced the Mold defence and his perfect cross into the box saw Dafydd Griffith head home his second goal of the game.
Town had further chances to increase their lead, sub Josh Maldon’s snap shot blocked by the Mold defence and Lloyd had a chance saved by Jones in Mold’s goal, but the Wellmen were happy with the result and under the conditions, played excellent football which would have left the good crowd of over 200 happy with the result as they walked away from Halkyn Road. Great win and roll on Wednesday night’s game at Halkyn Road against Buckley Town.
