Wellmen lose in local derby in front of a strong crowd of 740.

The Wellmen fell to defeat to a Flint side which deserved the win played in front of Flint's highest gate of the season when 740 packed into Cae y Castell for the big Christmas derby.

Backed on by more than half of the offical attendance, the Wellmen never got going and Flint put on most of the early pressure which saw Mike Platt saving well at the feet of new signing Sean Beck, who returned to the Flint side from Greenfield in time for the game, and it was Beck who opened the scoring on 18 minutes as his looping header beat Platt to give the home side the lead.

Midwaty through the half, Flint's Phil Clarke saw his attempted lob over Platt fall just wide of the post before a Filnt free kick into the box saw Aden Shannon's effort go over the bar. The Wellmen then saw a Paul Williams effort go wide of Ross Dalton's post before Mike Platt produced a great flying save to deny Phil Clarke doubling the home side's lead on 42 minutes.

The second half saw Holywell trying to get back into the game and Phil Lloyd had a brilliant effort saved by Dalton as his good save saw him push the ball away to safety with the Wellmen supporters behind the goal thiking it was flying into the top corner which would have levelled the scores and put the Wellmen back into the game. That save was the turning point in the game as a few minutes later, the home side doubled their lead through Steve Cunnigham, as his effort hit the back of the net via Platt's right hand post to double the home side's lead.

The goal killed off the game and ten minutes later, the Silkmen increased their lead as John Hill saw his effort across goal find the bottom corner with Platt beaten to give the home side all three points. Town then had their best chance of the afternoon as a good move down the left saw Paul Williams lay the ball off to sub Graeme Williams, who's effort went out via Dalton's right hand post. A few minutes later, with Town trying to get back into the game, Dafydd Griffith had a header cleared off the line from a Steve Thomas corner, before Steve Lewis had a header go over the bar from another corner from the left.

Flint pressed on for a 4th but the score remained 3-0 to the home side and the crowd of over 700 left Cae y Castell knowing the best side on the day won the match and the 3 points. The Wellmen must now forget the result and look to get back to winning ways on Saturday against Ruthin Town in the NEWFA Challenge cup.
