Holywell Town 4-0 Gresford Athletic

Halkyn Road was the venue for the match between of the form sides of the Huws Gray Alliance and Town had the perfect start after 5 minutes as Steve Lewis opened the scoring, Lewis cut inside the defender and curled his shot into the top corner past John Hill-Dunt, much to the delight of the Wellmen supporters.

Town were playing great football and the visitors wern’t getting a look in and with 25 minutes on the clock, the Wellmen doubled their lead. Lewis, who was a handful for the Gresford defence ran into the box and was brought down by Max Peate and the referee pointed to the spot, and Peate received his marching orders and the visitors were down to 10 men. Tom McElmeel stepped up to take the spot kick and scored to give Town a 2 goal lead.

Holywell Town pressed for more goals and a good move saw Phil Lloyd shoot at goal but Hill-Dunt saved well. Greasfrod then attacked on the break and Andy Swarbrick had a shot saved one handed by Mike Platt at his near post and the ball went out for a corner. Paul Williams then had a good shot saved for a Town corner and from the resulting corner, Tom McElmeel flicked the ball on and it fell to Jonathon Jones and his shot was blocked for another corner. From the resulting corner, Lewis had a shot which went wide of the post.
As the game went into the final 5 minutes of the half , Gresford had a good move which saw Owen Roberts flick the ball on to Jack Mountford, who’s run into the box saw him cross to the oncoming Roberts but his shot went wide of Mike Platt’s post. A minute later, Town added a third goal. Phil Lloyd, who was having a great game, crossed the ball inch perfect to Steve Lewis who’s first time volley flew into the top corner giving the keeper no chance! The goal is most definitely a contender for goal of the season to date.
A minute later, Town went further ahead and the same combination of Lloyd and Lewis, which saw the latter grabbing his hat trick, scoring at the far post from another great cross by Lloyd. The referee shortly blew for half time which saw the Wellmen 4 goals ahead at the interval!

The second half begun and the first chance fell to the Wellmen, as Dafydd Griffith headed over from a Tom McElmeel free kick. 10 minutes or so later, a good move involving Graeme Williams saw him pass to Phil Lloyd, but Lloyds shot was saved by Hill Dunt. Both teams had plenty of possession and a few chances were created for both sides. Owen Roberts had a long range effort fly over Mike Platt’s goal and in the dying minutes, Connor Littler had a shot saved by the keeper.

There were no further goals and the referee blew for full time and the Wellmen left the field to a standing ovation for a great performance. The win saw Town in 4th place in the Huws Gray Alliance League and already looking forward to the next couple of matches which will see the Wellmen travel to Llanfair United and Holyhead Hotspur.
