The Wellmen fire 5 past Rhayader

The Wellmen welcomed 2nd from bottom Rhayader Town to Halkyn Road and the game started brightly for the Wellmen with Steve Lewis shooting narrowly wide after a couple of minutes. Town were playing great football with Lewis and Ryan Davidson both going close, before Lewis had the best chance of the afternoon so far as a long ball from the back saw the bounce trick the defender and the ball fell to Lewis who’s shot was saved by Luke Evans.

A few minutes later, Paul D Williams had a shot saved after good work by Tom McElmeel and Connor Littler to set him up before Town took a deserved lead through McElmeel, tapping the ball home at the far post after the ball was played across the face of goal through a rook of players. The goal brought an even greater belief for the players and shot from long distance by Josh Roberts was picked up by Connor Littler, who controlled and shot at goal but his effort was brilliantly saved by Luke Evans, and as the ball rebounded back to Littler, he headed it back goalwards and Evans somehow managed to palm it away to safety.

Town doubled their lead on 42 minutes through Steve Lewis, who’s glancing header from Josh Roberts’ free kick beat the keeper and hit the back of the net to give Town a two goal cushion. The Wellmen made it 3 on the stroke of half time, a great ball over into the box by Tony Roebuck saw Steve Lewis lay the ball off to Ryan Davidson, who placed the ball into the bottom far corner to give Evans no chance. The goal ensured Town’ went in at the break 3 goals to the good.

The second half started and Town, with the three goal cushion continued to look for a 4th goal and Steve Lewis and Connor Littler both went close, and the 4th goal came midway through the half through sub Graeme Williams, who had only been on the pitch a few minutes saw his bullet header fly into the net from a Steve Thomas corner to beat Luke Evans.

A few minutes later, Town made it 5-0 through Tom McElmeel. Phil Lloyd ran into the box and he was bundled over by the Rhayader centre back and the referee pointed straight to the spot. McElmeel made no mistake and converted his spot kick, much to the delight of the home crowd who were enjoying the football that the Wellmen were playing.

Gethin Jones pulled one back for Rhayader with 78 minutes played before the last real chance of the match fell to Graeme Williams who headed wide from a Steve Lewis cross. The referee blew for full time and Town were happy with the victory which saw the Wellmen move to 2nd in the Huws Gray Alliance League.
