Town back to winning ways at Alyn Park

Mold Alex 2-7 Holywell Town

The Wellmen travelled to Mold Alex looking to put Wednesday night’s disappointment behind them and backed by a high number of supporters, Town took the lead as early as the 7th minute. A great ball into the box by Steve Thomas for Connor Littler to chase, saw him control the ball well and slid the ball past Christopher Leigh in the Mold Alex goal to give the Wellmen the lead.

Mold’s Danny Calvert then had an effort which Mike Platt gathered before Dafydd Griffith was only inches wide from doubling Town’s lead, heading wide from a Josh Roberts free kick. Town didn’t have too long to wait as the second goal was scored by Brett Cotton. Josh Roberts sent over a great corner, and Dafydd Griffith was at the far post and headed it back across the face of the goal, and Cotton was on hand to knock the ball over the line.

Mold were then reduced to 10 men as John Macauliffe was sent off for a high challenge on Steve Lewis but shortly afterwards, the home side reduced the arrears, as Jack Laird broke clear down the right, cut inside past the defender and shot past Platt to make it 2-1. The next 9 minutes belonged to Steve Lewis, as he notched up a hat trick to put the Wellmen well in control of the game. The first goal came on 24 minutes, Josh Roberts with a long ball to Lewis, who controlled well and rounds the keeper to tap the ball home. His second of the game came on 31 minutes; a ball over the top again by Roberts saw Lewis see that the oncoming keeper was off his line and gave a cheeky lob with the ball over Leigh to make it 4-1. Lewis completed his hat trick on 36 minutes, Ryan Davidson won the ball back off the Mold defender, and passes to Connor Littler on the edge of the area, who slides the ball across to Steve Lewis who shoots hard and watches as the ball goes into the net via the post to complete his hat trick.

On the stroke of half time, Tony Roebuck put in a great cross towards Littler, but Leigh was on hand to gather the ball in the air to prevent Littler getting the touch it needed, and as the referee blew for half time, the Wellmen went into the dressing room 5-1 up, much to the delight of the supporters.

10 minutes into the second half, Town increased their lead and again, it was Lewis who scored it, Steve Thomas with a great ball through for Lewis to chase, he controlled before shooting past the oncoming Leigh to make it 6-1. Town then had a good spell of pressure, Josh Roberts being a constant thorn in Mold’s side. Steve Thomas nearly got close to adding to the goals, as he passed the ball through to Danny Drasduskas, who wrong footed the defender with a deft back heel, but Thomas hadn’t continued his run and the ball was gathered by the keeper.

Town’s supporters were enjoying themselves and were in good voice. Singing and chanting at every opportunity, even chanting for Manager John Haseldin to put himself on the pitch but by then, the Holywell Manager had already thrown on his 3 subs, and the chants continued until a supporter mentioned that there had already been three changes so the chant soon disappeared!.

Mold had a free kick just on the outside of the penalty area, and Mold Sub Andreas Elonomaides effort was easily gathered by Mike Platt in the Holywell goal. Mold had a good spell of pressure during the final few minutes of the half, and a good run by Thomas Murray saw him beat his marker but his shot was high and wide.
Mold did pull one back on the stroke of the 90 minutes, as Gerrard Mullen beat the offside and fired the ball home past Platt. Not to be outdone, Town added a 7th goal deep into injury time through Danny Drazduskas. Steve Lewis with a cheeky lob over the defender, Drazduskas reacted the best and controlled before firing home from a tight angle, much to the delight of the Holywell Town supporters who were stood behind the goal.

That was the final bit of action in a pulsating match, seeing the Wellmen run out 7-2 winners and its safe to say, the lads have got last Wednesday night out of their system
