The Wellmen fall to defeat against the Seasiders at Halkyn Road.

Holywell Town 0-2 Prestatyn Town
Holywell Town welcomed the Seasiders to Halkyn Road and played in front of a good crowd, the teams took to the field ready for kick off. Holywell Town were the first to put on the pressure, Steve Lewis watching his effort saved and put out for a corner. Graeme Williams had a shot blocked before Lewis intercepted a crossfield pass and passed the ball to Tony Roebuck who shot wide.
Following that spell of pressure on the Prestatyn goal, their first effort very nearly brought a goal against the run of play. Jordan Davies was put through to a 1 on 1 chance against Mike Platt, but Platt saved his effort with his feet to deny the Prestatyn midfielder to open the scoring. Another quick break a few minutes later saw Jack Kenny attempt to chip Platt but his effort fell wide of Platt’s post. Mike Platt was once again called into action to produce a great save again off the lively Jordan Davies. Prestatyn then won a corner which was taken short, and the ball fell to Chris Davies who pulled his shot wide of the post.
Steve Lewis then broke free for the Wellmen and as he got into the penalty area, he rode the challenge of the defenders before he was brought down but the referee waved play on. Moments later, a slip by Dafydd Griffith put Jordan Davies in but once again, Mike Platt was on hand to produce a great one handed save to deny him. A few minutes later however, Davies gave the visitors the lead, a ball over the top saw Davies beat his marker, to run on and fire past Platt to break the deadlock.
Town looked to level the scores and Phil Lloyd broke clear into the Prestatyn area, he looked across and lay the ball off to Steve Lewis but his shot was blocked by the Prestatyn centre back. A few minutes later, Ryan Davidson intercepted a crossfield ball and controlled well, before setting himself up for a shot which flew inches too high of Mike Jones’ crossbar. Davidson was involved in Town’s next move, as he cleverly lobbed the ball over to Steve Lewis who tried to knock the ball past the advancing Jones but the ball fell wide of the far post. The half ended with the Wellmen piling on the pressure looking for a breakthrough before the break but it wasn’t to be and the referee blew the whistle for half time.
The second half got underway with The Wellmen once again putting pressure on the Prestatyn goal. A few minutes in, a deep ball into the box saw Phil Lloyd head the ball back across the face of goal but it was cleared by Prestatyn’s David Hayes for a corner, and from the advaincing corner, the ball fell to Lewis who’s deft chip saw the ball clip the top of the crossbar and out for a goal kick. Town were having a good spell and another deep ball to the far post saw Dafydd Griffith head goalwards but Jones once again pulled off a good save to deny the equaliser. Jones was once again in the thick of the action a few minutes later, saving well to deny Phil Lloyd before Peter Hoy then picked up a yellow card by the match referee.
Mike Platt then done well to knock the ball out for a corner to deny Alex Jones who had got passed him deep in the penalty area but crossed to his teammate to give Platt a chance to get a hand down to save the cross. Tom McElmeel then fired high over the crossbar off a Steve Thomas cross from outside the area. Town’s task was made even harder a few minutes later as Hoy was given his marching orders for a second yellow card. Phil Lloyd then crossed for Steve Lewis but the ball was cleared before he could challenge for it, then with a couple of minutes to go, the visitors made sure of the win by adding a second.
Brett Cotton attempted to chest the ball back to Mike Platt from a cross into the area, and the weak pass was intercepted by Alex Jones who calmly knocked the ball past Platt to give the Seasiders a 2 goal advantage with a couple of minutes remaining. The Seasiders could have made it 3 deep into injury time, as John Fisher Cooke fired the ball towards goal but Platt saved well and prevented the ball from crossing the line given the angle he was stood, with the visitors supporters stood behind the goal screaming that the ball had crossed the line.
The referee played approx 3 minutes of extra time before finally blowing to end the game, and the Holywell Town players came off the pitch, disappointed they couldn’t play to their maximum potential, but the lads must get the result out of their system by the weekend as we face Mold Alex in what will be a difficult league game at Alyn Park.
