The Wellmen end their League Campaign on a high!

Holywell Town 3-0 Glantraeth

The Wellmen rounded off their league campaign with a home fixture against 3rd place Glantraeth, and everyone at the club were looking forward to the Trophy Presentation after the game where we were to be presented with the Welsh Alliance League Champions Trophy.
The game started with both teams trying to take control of the game and it was the Wellmen who drew first blood as Phil Lloyd shot past Ben Heald in the Glantraeth goal before rushing to celebrate with the supporters behind the goal. This was the start that Town needed and the early goal settled the players into their normal game. Tom McElmeel then hit a free kick over the crossbar before Dafydd Griffth had a volley cleared by Gareth Owen from a Steve Thomas corner.

With 25 mionutes on the clock, Stuart Hayes broke clear down the right and as he got into the penalty area, he crossed the ball over towards the onrushing Phil Lloyd but the pass was slightly over hit and Lloyd was unable to connect. Glantraeth then won a corner and Rory Courlander got his head to the ball at the near post but no one was there to head the ball home. A few minutes later, Town had doubled their lead.

Dafydd Griffith won the ball in defence and thread the ball out wide to Ryan Davies and he powered forward. Davies then crossed the ball into the penalty area and Stuart Hayes was on hand to volley the ball home to double Town’s lead. Phil Lloyd then broke clear and shot wide before the last chance of the half fell to Glantraeth as a cross by Craig Roberts found the head of Rory Courlander but his header went wide of Mike Platt’s goal.

The second half got under way and the first chance of the half fell to the Wellmen, as Phil Lloyd crossed the ball to Stuart Hayes, but Lloyd pass was too hard and the chance had gone. Glantraeth then won a free kick in a dangerous position and Brendun Hogan’s effort was cleared by the Wellmen defence. Dafydd Griffith then got on the end of a Steve Thomas free kick but the ball was cleared for a corner by Guto Hughes.

Phil Lloyd shot tamely at Ben Heald who was able to gather before another dangerous Steve Thomas free kick was lofted into the area and Matty Harvey headed the ball goalwards but went inches wide. Thomas then skipped past Tomos Clarice and his shot was saved well by Heald. Thomas then took a corner which was cleared by Glantraeth captain Gareth Owen before Ryan Davies had a goal disallowed for handball.

Glantraeth’s Matthew Lock then had a shot cross the face of Platts goal but went wide of the target before Paul Williams wrapped the game up for the Wellmen on 77 minutes with the 3rd goal of the game. Williams picked up the ball and ran at the Glantraeth defence, he skipped past a couple of challenges before shooting low into the bottom corner with Heald well beaten. Williams broke clear again a few minutes later but his shot was saved by Heald before Matty Roberts nearly brought the house down but his effort was deflected out for a corner by Glantraeth’s Guto Hughes.

The referee blew for full time and the Wellmen had won 3-0 infront of a crowd of 420. The trophy presentation was greeted by loud applause and the supporters stopped to cheer the champions as they danced on celebrated on the podium with the trophy. It had been a great year and the manner in which Town won the league will be talked about for years to come, winning 23 of the 26 games played, drawing twice and the one solitary defeat at Glantraeth the only blip on the season. Remarkably, Town scored 119 league goals during the season, conceding 19 to give us a difference of + 100!!! Town now look forward to Saturday’s Mawddach Cup Final against Llanrug United and will be looking for more silver ware for the season.
