Holywell Town welcomed Gwalchmai to Halkyn Road for The Wellmen’s penultimate home game of the season.

Holywell’s first real chance fell to Luke Tyson but his shot sailed over Paul Evans’ crossbar. Tyson only had to wait a few minutes until he broke the deadlock, sliding home from a Sam Jones cross and getting the all important touch ahead of the goalkeeper who was ready to collect the ball.

Both teams had chances to score, but none were taken and shortly after the half hour mark, Town increased their lead through Stuart Hayes who tapped in from close range from a Luke Tyson cross. With a few minutes to go, Sam Jones had a penalty appeal waived away by referee Nathan Jones, after he had been tripped by a Gwalchmai defender just inside the box. With a minute to go, a great long ball by John Leonard found Sam Jones and he picked the ball up and raced forward and cut inside the defender, completely wrong footing him before shooting but the ball was palmed away by Evans for a Town corner in what was the last bit of action in the first half.
The second half begun with Gwlachmai pressing to get a goal back as Corey Sinnott had a shot saved well by Mike Platt and the ball went out for a corner, and from the resulting kick, Paul Bryan shot well wide. Town then had a goal disallowed as the referee saw that there was a nudge in the back of John Jones as Matty Harvey rose to head the ball home. A few minutes later, another corner for the Wellmen saw the ball lifted into the penalty area and Evans flapped at the cross and dropped it at the feet of Stuart Hayes, who’s effort was cleared off the line.

Shortly afterwards, Town had scored a third through Luke Tyson who grabbed his second of the game. Graeme Williams fed the ball through the defence well and Luke Tyson picked it up and his shot was blocked and took a kind deflection back to the feet of Tyson who literally walked the ball into the net to make it 3-0 to the Wellmen. A few minutes later, Gwalchmai scroed a consolation goal, as a shot was saved by Mike Platt in the Holywell Town goal, but the ball came back out and seemed to hit Kelvin Frazer on the arm before he controlled and tapped the ball in.

Corey Sinnott then broke clear and had his shot saved by Platt before Town had an effort blocked by Evans. The goalkeeper was then forced to clear the ball upfield but the poor clearance found the head of Sam Jones who headed back into the danger area for Tyson to chase, and as he got to the ball, the goalkeeper lunged forward with both feet in the air and they both collided, but the referee, after consulting with his linesman did not give the penalty! A minute later, Sam Jones broke to the byline and his low cross was met by Phil Lloyd who gave it a slight touch goalwards but the keeper saved well.

With 2 minutes remaining, Town wrapped the game up with a 4th goal through Dafydd Griffith who’s shot from outside the area flew in through a packed penalty area from a Sam Jones corner. The game was brought to an end a few minutes later and Town were happy to pick up 3 points and to keep their home matches winning run going into the final weekend of the season.
