Holywell Town welcomed Pwllheli to Halkyn Road for the 2nd time in a week as the Wellmen had beaten the Lleyn Peninsular side by 3 goals to nil to boo

Played in beautiful spring sunshine, the Wellmen took control early on, with Steve Thomas unsettling the Pwllheli defence with his strong run down the left before crossing the ball towards Stuart Hayes but his effort was blocked. Pwllheli’s Carl Jones was booked for a challenge on Tony Roebuck before Town took the lead with 8 minutes on the clock. Another good run by Steve Thomas down the left saw him break into the box and skipped past the challenge of the defender before unleashing a shot past Neil Jones and the ball hit the roof of the net. A great start by the Wellmen and a couple of minutes later, Sam Jones had a goal disallowed for being in an offside position. With 25 minutes played, Town doubled their lead as Paul Williams ran in on goal from the right, got past a challenge by the defender then shot low into the bottom corner.
On 20 minutes, Pwllheli had their first chance of the game. Steve Thomas conceded a free kick and Pwllheli played it short and Mark Jones was through on goal but his shot went past Mike Platt’s far post. Am minute later, The Wellmen had increased their lead. Matty Roberts made a great run forward and lay the ball off to the oncoming Sam Jones, and the top scorer unleashed an powerful shot which flew into the top corner.
Pwllheli’s day was made worse on 23 minutes as Carl Jones put in another needless tackle and the referee had no alternative but to show him his second yellow card and Jones was sent off and Pwllheli were down to 10 men. Pwllheli then conceded a 4th as Steve Thomas had a shot saved well but the rebound fell to Tony Roebuck who tapped the ball home. A couple of minutes later, it was 5-0 as Sam Jones grabbed his second of the game, picking the ball up, he controlled well, dribbled past the defender before slotting the ball home past Jones. Pwllheli’s Mark Bridge then broke clear but he slipped and the ball bobbled and his shot went well wide of the post.
On the half hour mark, Stuart Hayed broke through and Barry Evans put in a great tackle to prevent Hayes shooting at goal. Tony Roebuck then had a shot well saved and out for a corner, and from the resulting corner, Matty Harvey had a free header at the far post but it fell wide of the post. Town made it six on 32 minutes, as Paul Williams ran into the box and had his shot saved and the ball fell close to Stuart Hayes who fell to the floor under the challenge of Terry Ogilvy, but Hayes somehow managed to scoop the ball up and overhead kick into the net, whilst on the floor. Sam Jones then fired over after a good ball by Steve Thomas before Pwllheli’s Barry Evans had a weak shot saved by Platt. Town then made it 7-0 on the stroke of half time through Steve Thomas to give Town a 7 goal cushion at the break.
The second half got underway and Town and Sam Jones fed the ball through to Matty Roberts, but his shot across the face of goal went inches wide. Paul Williams then had a shot go wide before substitute Luke Tyson was straight in on the action as his first touch saw Neil Jones save well from his effort. A couple of minutes later, it was 8-0 as sub Graeme Williams broke into the box from the left and beat a couple of challenges before shooting home from a tight angle. Tyson then crossed the ball well to Lloyd but his header went wide of the goal.
With just under a quarter of an hour to go, Town very nearly made it 9 as Phil Lloyd had an effort blocked and the ball fell to Tyson, but his great shot on the turn came back off the post and was cleared to safety. Pwllheli then won a free kick just inside the Wellmen’s half, and Tom Mahoney then hit the free kick goalwards and Mike Platt came out to gather but as no one was there to challenge, he let it go over his head and out for a goal kick.
With 10 minutes to go, Sturat Hayes released Luke Tyson, but his shot was blocked then John Leonard watched as his looping effort from outside the box came back out off the crossbar. Town didn’t have to wait too long for the next goal, as Sam Jones completed his hat trick with a fine individual goal. Jones picked up the ball and cut inside the defence and skipped past them before shooting low into the bottom corner of the net past Neil Jones. The goal also marked Town’s 100th League goal of the season to date which is a great achievement.
Pwllheli’s Mark Jones then broke clear and in a one on one situation with Platt, his effort was blocked by Platt, but the follow up by Gareth Williams saw his effort fly over the bar so there was no consolation goal for Pwllheli. On virtually the full time whistle, Town won a corner and Matty Roberts’ great ball in saw the loose ball fall to Dafydd Griffith who tapped home to give Town a 10-0 victory, and also saw Town extend their lead at the top and everyone connected with the club can’t wait for Monday’s game against Bamouth & Dyffryn at Halkyn Road.
