Rampant Holywell fire 7 past The Roosters!

Holywell Town 7 - 1 Llanrwst United

Holywell Town welcomed Llanrwst United to Halkyn Road and Town took the lead on 6 minutes when captain Sam Jones’ shot from 20 yards beat Paul Roberts to give Town the start they wanted. A few minutes later, Town added a second when Dafydd Griffith got up to power home a header from Sam Jones’ corner. This was no more than Town deserved and they looked to add more to the tally but it was Llanrwst who scored next when Arron Jones pulled one back for the visitors. A cross in to the Holywell penalty box found the head of Jones and his looping header evaded Mike Platt and nestled in the back of the net.

Any fears that Town supporters had of a Llanrwst United comeback were put to bed on 23 minutes when Phil Lloyd gave Town a 3-1 lead after a lovely through ball by Graeme Williams. 7 minutes later it was 4-1 after Sam Jones grabbed his second of the game. Jones was put through by a great ball from midfield and he beat his marker and slid the ball past Roberts. A couple of minutes later, Lloyd went close as his turn and shot flew just over the bar.

Llanrwst United were reduced to 10 men on 40 minutes as Jamie Turner done a bad 2 footed lunge at Town’s Graeme Williams and the referee had no alternative but to show Turner his second yellow of the day and he was sent off the field play. This was not going to help the Rooster’s cause but they wern’t going to give up and Tom Cad-Williams’ free kick flew inches over Platt’s crossbar. On the stroke of half time, Sam Jones headed just wide from a great cross by Tony Roebuck.

The second half started and Town had a goal disallowed when Phil Lloyd put the ball into the net but the linesman’s flag was raised and the goal wasn’t given. Sam Jones completed his hat trick a few minutes later after being put through on goal and he tapped the ball past the onrushing Roberts and the ball trickled into the back of the net. Despite already having 5 goals past him at this stage of the match, Roberts was having a good game and he made a good point blank save to deny Lloyd before the ball was cleared. Roberts was The Roosters saviour a few minutes later as he saved well from Paul Williams’ effort, before Tom McElmeel saw his effort fly over the crossbar.

On the hour mark, Phil Lloyd grabbed his second of the game as he coolly chipped the ball over Roberts from the edge of the penalty area. Town then made a couple of substitutions and new signing Rob Salathiel made his debut for the Wellmen. A minute after coming on, Salathiel nearly had a dream debut and his first touch saw his shot come back off the post with Roberts beaten. Luke Tyson then went close after a good cross by Matty Harvey.

Town were putting a lot of pressure on the Llanrwst goal, and a Salathiel cross saw Harvey head the ball back into the danger area, the ball was partially cleared and from the edge of the box, Lloyd attempted a stunning overhead kick which wasn’t too far wide of the post. Shaun Pritchard then had a good shot saved well by Roberts but Pritchard soon got himself on the scoresheet by completing the scoring on 87 minutes. Salathiel was put through and his shot was saved well again by Roberts but the ball fell to Pritchard who’s shot was partially saved by Roberts but there was enough power on the shot to see it end in the back of the net.

A few minutes later, the referee blew for full time and Town had once again put in a great performance and had a well deserved victory to make it 23 winning games on the bounce and all eyes now turn to Tuesday’s game against Kinmel Bay which is to be played at Llandudno FC.
