Holywell Town increased their lead at the top of the Welsh Alliance after a 5-0 victory over Llandudno Junction.

The first effort of the night fell to Holywell’s Sam Jones who tried his luck from outside the box, but his shot from the left hand side found the top of the net. Town didn’t have to wait too long to open the scoring, as Tom McElmeel gave the Wellmen the lead. He brought the ball inside from the left, then took a shot from outside the area and it nestled into the bottom corner, beating the dive of Goalkeeper Gwydion Owen for a great start by the Wellmen.

With 20 minutes on the clock, Junction had their first effort on goal as Bryan Roberts took a shot which Mike Platt got down well to his left to save the ball. The Wellmen then went up the other end and Sam Jones was put through but his effort was blocked then Luke Tyson was only inches away when his shot flew over the crossbar.

Llandudno Junction then had their best effort of the half on 25 minutes. A great free kick into the Holywell Town penalty area saw the ball fall to Jamie Jones, and his shot was blocked and fell to the onrushing Bryan Roberts who’s first time shot was well saved again by Platt.

Just after the half hour mark, Phil Lloyd beat his defender after being put in on goal, but his effort was blocked by the keeper and he managed to get a hand to the ball to see it go out for a corner. From the resulting corner by Matty Roberts, Phil Lloyd got up well to head the ball goalwards but disappointingly it came back out off the crossbar.

The Wellmen doubled their lead shortly afterwards. Junction keeper Owen threw the ball out towards a Junction player but Sam Jones read the ball well and dispossessed the ball before it could reach a Junction player, and as he ran in on the goal, his inch perfect cross found Phil Lloyd who fired home with the keeper well beaten.

The second half started brightly for the Wellmen as Paul Williams was only inches over after turning with the ball before shooting but his effort went over the bar. A few minutes later, Luke Tyson saw his cross come shot hit the crossbar before being put out for a corner by the Junction defender. From the resulting corner, Sam Jones delivered a perfect ball into the box and Jack D’arcy rose well to head the ball pass Owen to give Town a 3 goal lead. A couple of minutes later, Jones again delivered a brilliant ball into the penalty area and Matty Harvey poked the ball home to make it four without reply to the Wellmen.

With 73 minutes on the clock, Town had a perfect goal disallowed after Paul Williams took a shot which was blocked by the advancing keeper and the ball deflected to Phil Lloyd who struck the ball home. The linesman raised his flag to indicate Lloyd was offside despite a Junction defender playing him onside. Town did not let this get to them too much and with 10 minutes to go, Paul Williams completed the scoring after picking the ball up just outside the area and calmly fired the ball into the bottom corner with Owen beaten.

The referee blew for full time and the result means the Wellmen are now 13 points ahead of Llandudno Junction having played the same amount of games. A great performance by the Wellmen and Saturday can’t come soon enough!
