Town make it 10 out of 10 with great performance against Penrhyndeudraeth

Welsh Alliance Division 1
Holywell Town 5-0 Penrhyndeudraeth

The Wellmen welcomed Penrhyndeudraeth to Halkyn Road and were expecting a difficult game as the visitors have settled well in the first division after their promotion last season and are having a good season to date.

The game was only 90 seconds old when Holywell Town took the lead. Phil Lloyd acrobatically turned in Dafydd Griffith header across goal to give Robert Watson no chance in the Penrhyn goal. What a start and Town were looking to add to their tally early on with Sam Jones having a couple of chances before Lloyd added a 2nd with 10 minutes on the clock. A great move down the right saw Paul Williams break clear and his inch perfect cross was met by Lloyd who volleyed the ball home to double Town’s lead.
Town were on fire and Tony Roebuck had a shot deflected out for a corner before Jones again had a shot saved brilliantly by Watson in goal who parried the ball out for a corner. Jones took the corner and it was met by Tom McElmeel who headed the ball home to give Town a 3 goal cushion with 20 minutes gone. Town were not holding back and another good move saw Paul Williams lay the ball off to Sam Jones but his shot flew inches over.

Penrhyndeudraeth did have a couple of half chances but they were kept at bay by Town’s back four who coped with anything that came their way. Jones again had a shot saved by Watson and any fears that it was going to be one of them days for Jones were put to bed on the stroke of half time as he added Town’s 4th of the day. Jones was put through by Lloyd and he ran towards goal, avoiding the challenges of Michael Foster and slid the ball into the bottom corner of the net with Watson unable to get a touch to the ball. As the teams went in at the break, Town had raced to a resounding 4 goal lead and the visitors were shell shocked.

The second half began and the first chance fell to Matthew Hughes but his shot went wide of Mike Platts goal. Town pressed for a 5th and a good move down the left saw Steve Thomas thread the ball through to Jones, and he beat is man and lay the ball off to Thomas but his snap shot went wide of Fosters post. Matty Harvey then went close for the Wellmen but his overhead effort from a Steve Thomas corner fell inches wide of the post. Williams then broke clear down the right and his pass across goal saw Lloyd blast the ball wide. Another good move saw Williams in on goal but the angle was tight and his effort hit the side netting.

It was all Holywell again and Jones was causing headaches for Penrhyn’s back four. Jones broke clear and his low cross across goal was agonisingly a little too hard for Thomas and his lunge saw him fail to connect the ball by inches. It was the other way next as Thomas thread the ball through for Jones, but his fierce shot took a deflection and shot over the bar. Lloyd was then put through by Jones but his effort went wide before Town introduced new signing Shaun Pritchard to the action. Pritchard nearly capped his debut with a goal, but his header from an inch perfect Sam Jones cross flew inches wide of the post.

With 77 minutes played, Jones added Town’s fifth, combining well with Lloyd to steer the ball home with the keeper well beaten. Lloyd was then put through but Watson saved his shot well with his feet. The score remained 5-0 for the Wellmen despite a couple of other chances near the end of the match, but Town were more than happy with Today’s performance and the match and result was the perfect preparation to next week’s big Welsh Cup game against Mold Alex.

Well played lads!
