Holywell Town had been selected as one of the home team's for this season's Groundhop UK weekend and we were down to host neighbours Llandyrnog United for an early Bank Holiday Monday fixture.
Llandyrnog United started brightly and Rhys Llwyd almost gave the visitors the lead but his effort went over Michael Platt's crossbar. It didnt take long for the Wellmen to take the lead and Sam Jones kept his goalscoring record in tact by opening the scoring on 7 minutes, shooting home after the visitors defence had failed to clear the ball.
Town were unable to increase their lead and honours were evenly matched until Town broke clear and Jones saw his shot hit the post and rebound out towards Steve Thomas but his effort sailed wide of the target. Town took the lead with a few minutes remaining when Luke Tyson's header made it 2-0 for the home team.
The opening period of the second half was evenly matched with both teams seeing plenty of the ball but Town were awarded a penalty midway through the second half. Sam Jones stood up to take the kick but watched in agony as his fierce spot kick rattled the crossbar and Llandyrnog breathed a sigh of relief.
The miss however did not come back to haunt the hosts as Sub Graeme Williams slotted the ball home with his first touch to give Town the points.
The refereee blew for full time and the 377 strong crowd had witnessed a good game but Holywell Town were too strong for Llandyrnog United and Town now have their eyes on the tricky game away to Llanrug this coming Saturday.
