The Wellmen fire 5 past the League newcomers to maintain our 100% record.

Holywell Town 5-1 Kinmel Bay

Town welcomed League Newcomers Kinmel Bay to Halkyn Road as we looked at getting our 3rd win of the season to maintain our 100% record.

The game opened brightly and Town were soon into their stride and the first real chance fell on 6 minutes. Paul Williams cut inside into the box from the right and rode a couple of challenges and tried to get a better angle on goal to shoot but couldn’t so he passed it out to Steve Thomas who was deemed to be fractionally offside. A few minutes later, Town won a free kick on the left and Sam Jones delivered a great ball into the box and the forwards left it but Steve Sayburn was alert to the danger and cleared the ball off the line, but only as far as Tom McElmeel who’s shot was blocked on the line, and despite shouts for handball, the referee waved play on.
Kinmel Bay’s first chance fell on 16 minutes. Andreas Alvarado broke clear down the right and his cross towards Ashly Wood was dealt brilliantly by Matty Harvey who headed the ball clear. A few minutes later, Town should have taken the lead. Steve Thomas, who was having a good game on the left broke clear and his cross was met by Paul Williams, who’s first time effort hit the bar and went out for a goal kick. Matty Harvey then got a great ball across the face of goal but Tom McElmeel watched as Sayburn saved his shot, getting down early to gather the ball. Town won another corner and it fell to Matty Harvey but his header flew over the bar.

We then saw two penalties in the space of 2 minutes. The first fell to Kinmel Bay after Alvardado was brought down by John Davies and Gene Foulkes made no mistake from the penalty spot to give the visitors the lead. Town did not let this get to them and a minute or so later, Town were level. Sam Jones broke clear down the left and cut inside into the box. He rounded the keeper who consequently tugged at his shirt, but the referee waived play on and Sam watched in despair as his effort rebounded off the post to safety. The Referee however blew for a penalty for the earlier tug on Sam’s Shirt and Jones stood up himself to take it and made no mistake to equalise for the Wellmen.

The second half was 10 minutes old when Town took a deserved lead. Sam Jones, who was causing problems to the visitors back four ran on at goal from the left and again, hit the ball past the oncoming keeper but this time made now mistake to put Town into the lead which was Sam's 7th goal in 3 matches! 5 minutes later, it was 3-1 as Steve Thomas pounced at the back post after once again, brilliant work by Sam Jones as his cross flew across the face of the goal, helped by the faintest of touches off the Goalkeepers hands and Thomas was on hand to slide the ball home.

Phil Lloyd put the game beyond Kinmel Bay’s reach on 68 minutes before he added his second on 75 minutes, heading home after Dafydd Griffith has put in a great cross to the far post, and Steve Thomas was there to head the ball back into the centre where Lloyd was on hand to head the ball home. Town were looking for more and Sam Jones went on a great run from the middle of the park, beating the challenge of a defender and his shot was blocked by the keeper before coming back out to Jones who’s second shot was once again blocked by the Kinmel Bay defence.

Kinmel Bay had a couple of shots near the end of the match but they weren’t able to reduce the arrears and Town were deserved winners which sees the Wellmen sitting 3rd in the league behind Llandudno Junction but we do have a game in hand on the railway men. Next up for Holywell Town is the Bank Holiday Monday early kick off against Llanyrnog United, which is part of the GroundHop weekend.

Picture: Inform Sam Jones who has scored 7 goals in past 3 matches.
