The Wellmen travelled to the Hollingsworth Group Stadium to face League Leaders Airbus Broughton and found themselves a goal behind after 10 minutes. THe home side won a free kick just outside the area and Matty McGinn's kick hit the Wellmen wall and took a massive deflection to wrong foot goalkeeper Andy Metcalf and nestled into the far corner of the net to give Airbus the lead. The home side added a second 10 minutes later, ex Wellmen player Brady McGilloway burst down the right, and beat Jake Cooke, before crossing low to the onrushing Asa Hamilton who tapped the ball home.
Airbus had the grit between their teeth and went looking for more goals, Lewis Buckley had a shot saved by Metcalf, then a good cross by Nathan Quirk found Ryan Edwards but he glanced his header wide of the target. With half an hour played, Asa Hamilton found the ball and turned past Jonathon Jones but Metcalf saved his shot.
The Wellmen looked to get back into the game but the home side's defence was strong and thwarted any attacks and up the other end, Airbus nearly added a third but Hamilton's effort came back out off the post then on the stroke of half time Metcalf kept the Wellmen in the game with a great save to deny Lewis Buckley increasing the Wellmen's lead.
Town came out for the second half looking for an early goal to give them hope, and played better than the first half but couldn't find the target. Sam Jones burst forward and beat his marker, he then switched the ball out to Lee Davey, but his cross was a little to hard and went out for a goal kick. Airbus added a third goal on 70 minutes when he slid in at the far post then they completed their scoring in the final 10 minutes when Matty McGinn added his second of the game, his effort finding the top corner beyond the reach of Man of the match Metcalf. With a few minutes left, Town nearly had a consolation goal when Joe Carey had a shot but keeper Dave Roberts saved then in the dying moments, Brady McGilloway fired over the cross bar, then Curtis Strong had a great chance to get Airbus a 5th goal but Metcalf saved well in a 1-1 against Strong.
The victory saw Airbus Broughton in the hat for the second round of the Huws Gray Alliance League Cup and we would like to wish them well for the remainder of the competition.
