Afan Lido 1-0 Holywell Town
Holywell Town travelled to South Wales to face Afan Lido in the 3rd round of the Welsh Cup.
The match was played in blustery conditions, with both teams struggling at first to cope with the elements. The hosts took the lead on after 16 minutes when Elliott Thomas's effort into the top corner curled past Mike Platt in the Wellmen's goal. A few minutes later, Town could have equalised after Brady McGilloway lay the ball off to Steve Lewis but he watched as his effort went over the Afan Lido's crossbar.
With 38 minutes on the clock, McGilloway smashed a volley against the angle of cross bar and post before Lido miss a great chance on the stroke of half time to double their lead.
The second half gets underway and Holywell Town had a great chance with 55 minutes to equalise but Phil Lloyd's effort deflected out for a corner. McGilloway then had a shot curl inches past the post. Afan Lido were reduced to 10 men midway through the half as Lido's Carl Evans saw red for an off the ball incident. With time running out for the Wellmen, the visitors kept the pressure on but couldn't find the important goal to take the tie into extra time, and with a few minutes on the clock, Town's cause wasn't helped when Steve Lewis received his second yellow card of the game and was sent off the field of play.
The Referee blew for full time and despite a good effort put in by the lads, it was the hosts who made it into the next round and the club would like to wish them well in the competition.
