The Wellmen progress into the 2nd round of the Welsh Cup

Holywell Town travelled to Ruthin Town for the first round tie against the Welsh National League side and it was the home side who had the first chance as Gethin Lloyd headed wide from a corner in from the left. Tom McElmeel then saw his free kick hit the wall from a free kick. Connor Littler headed wide from a great ball over the top by Phil Lloyd.

Ryan Davidson then shot just wide of the Ruthin post before Littler then had a shot which defelcetd and fell to Paul Williams, who controlled the ball to shoot but his shot went across the face of the goal and out for a goal kick. With a few minutes remaining of the half, the Wellmen were let off after a weak clearance by Paul Turner saw Callum Lloyd pick up the ball, buthis first time effort flew wide of Turner's goal. Town then had the best move of the half, Tom McElmeel beat the challenges of 3 defenders, before crossing over towards Phil Lloyd at the far post but his shot was saved well by the goalkeeper Richard Parry.

The second half started well for the Wellmen, Paul Williams run down the right saw him cross the ball towards Littler but his header went wide of Parry's post. A few minutes later, Steve Thomas' free kick over towards the far post saw Parry produce a point blank save to deny Littler with giving Town the lead as the ball was cleared to safety.

Graeme Williams then saw a shot hit the side netting before another Littler header came back off the post and the ball rolled across the face of the goal to Tom McElmeel, who watched in horror as his shot rolled past the post for a goal kick. With an hour on the clock, a great knock over the top saw the goal keeper come running off his line and Littler's attempted chip dropped just wide of the post.

The breakthrough came a few minutes later however as Littler broke the deadlock. Ryan Davidson made a great run down the left, beating the challenges of 2 defenders before crossing the ball over to the area, where a sliced clearance by the defender saw it fly towards Littler who headed the ball home to the corner of the net, much to the delight of the strong Holywell Town supporters at the game.

Ryan Davidson had a shot fly over the bar before Ruthin had a chance as Mathew Davies flicked the ball on towards Garmon Hafal, and his attempted chip over the advancing Paul Turner flew high over the crossbar. Ruthin Town heaped more pressure on the Wellmen in the dying moments as Matthew Davies had a shot go over the bar from a free kick and deep into injury time, the hosts won a penalty after Davies had been brought down. After a slight delay in the game as Ross Ankers was treated for a bad injury on the pitch, Dan Porter stepped up to take the spot kick which was brilliantly saved by Turner, and Porter followed up by controlling well before shooting over the bar with the goal at his mercy. A massive let off for the Wellmen as they would have had to play extra time with 10 men after Ankers' injury and having used up all of the subs.

That was the final kick of the game and Town find themselves still in the hat for the next round.
