The Wellmen progress into the semi final of the Mawddach Cup.

Holywell Town looked to put last Tuesday’s defeat in the Cookson Cup behind them and go in search of more silverware, this time in the Mawddach Cup. Pwllheli were the visitors for this Quarter final and a home tie against Kinmel Bay awaits the winners in the Semi Final.
Town started brightly and took the lead in the 10th minute through Steve Thomas. Luke Tyson’s cross was met by Thomas near the post, and his deft flick tricked the defence and the ball went into the net. Town went further ahead a couple of minutes later, Dafydd Griffith forcing the ball home at the far post.

Pwllheli tried to get back into the game and Carl Jones had a shot saved by Mike Platt. A few minues later, Mark Jones had a shot which got blocked by Jack D’arcy and Carl Jones’ follow up shot was cleared by Matty Harvey. On 40 minutes, Town won a free kick in a dangerous position and Sam Jones’ free kick was saved by Pwllheli’s Jamie Underwood who’s flying save forcing the ball out for a corner. On the stroke of half time, Tony Roebuck had a shot which went inches wide of Underwood’s post.

The second half was barely a couple of minutes old when Town killed the game with the decisive 3rd goal. The ball fell to Sam Jones who ran into the box, and he slotted the ball home past the advancing Underwood to give Town a 3 goal cushion. Town looked to increase their lead and a few minutes later, Jones again had a shot blocked and the ball fell to Roebuck but his shot was also blocked before the ball was cleared to safety.

Steve Thomas then sent in a dangerous cross into the penalty area and Underwood pushed the ball away but it was picked up by Tyson but his shot flew over the bar. With 15 minutes remaining, Graeme Williams was brought down on the edge of the area, and Sam Jones’ free kick was blocked by the wall, but the rebound fell to Ceri James and his effort came back off the cross bar for what would have been a debut goal for the new signing from Porthmadog.

Pwllheli’s Mark Jones had a free kick go over the bar in what was one of the last incidents of the game and the referee blew for full time and Town were safetly through to the semi final where Kinmel Bay awaits the Wellmen. Great performance and bounced back well after Tuesday’s defeat in the Cookson Cup Final.
