The Wellmen progress into the next round of the Mawddach Cup after a 5-0 win over Trearddur Bay.

Mawddach Cup Round 2
Holywell Town 5-0 Trearddur Bay

Holywell Town welcomed Trearddur Bay to Halkyn Road for the Mawddach Cup Round 2 match where both teams were top of their respective Divisions.

The game started with both teams trying to take control and the first chance fell to the Wellmen as Lee Emberton brought out a great save from Trearddur’s keeper Mike Doutch as he had to make a flying save to deny Emberton’s free kick hitting the back of the net. Town didn’t have to wait to long to break the deadlock, a great run by Paul Williams down the left saw him cut inside past the defender and his low cross was initially blocked by the ball fell to Graeme Williams who fired the ball home.

Trearrdur Bay then got into the game and had a couple of chances with Mike Davies’ header being the closest effort on Mike Platt’s goal but his header went wide of the post. A couple of other chances fell the Bay’s way but Platt wasn’t really tested and the score remained 1-0 to the Wellmen. As the half progressed, Town piled on the pressure looking for the second goal but Doutch produced a couple of good saves to deny Lloyd and debutant Stuart Hayes. As the half came to a close, Paul Williams had a free kick go over so the teams went in at the break with Town a goal to the good.

The second half started with Phil Lloyd heading wide from a Paul Williams cross then a great cross over by Graeme Williams saw Mike Doutch punch clear with Dafydd Griffith waiting at the far post to head home. On the hour mark, Luke Tyson broke clear and cut inside and wrong footed the defender and his cross was partially cleared to Paul Williams who’s shot hit Phil Lloyd and a wicked deflection off Lloyd saw the ball beat Doutch to give Town a 2-0 lead. Minutes later, Ryan Davies had a header cleared off the line and as the ball was going away from goal, Sean O’Toole pushed Stuart Hayes and the referee had no alternative but to point to the spot.

Paul Williams stepped up to take the penalty and his spot kick beat Doutch to give Town a 3-0 lead to end Trearddur Bay’s hopes of getting back into the game. Minutes later, Hayes fed the ball through to Graeme Williams and his cross saw Paul Williams get on the end of it and his shot was well saved by Doutch. Town added a 4th on 73 minutes Richard Williams let a Graeme Williams cross run under his foot to the unmarked Graham Boylan who tapped the ball home to make it 4-0. Both Tony Roebuck and Paul Williams nearly added a 5th but their efforts were blocked by the defenders and despite Trearddur Bay looking to hit Town on the counter attack and get a consolation goal, it was the Wellmen who added a 5th as a brilliant Free Kick over by Matty Roberts found Dafydd Griffith at the far post to head home to make it an convincing win for the Wellmen, who now face Pwllheli in the next round on the 28th March at Halkyn Road.
