Town progress into the last 16 at Tywyn

FAW Trophy – Round 4
Tywyn / Bryncrug 1-4 Holywell Town

The Wellmen travelled to Tywyn / Bryncrug looking to book their place in the next round and Town had the first effort after a couple of minutes when Luke Tyson’s shot was blocked by the legs of Tywyn’s keeper George Richards. Tyson was in action again a minute or so later but his effort this time went wide of the post. Town were piling on the pressure and Paul Williams burst through into the box from the right and his low cross was cleared from the danger area, then a few minutes later, Phil Lloyd’s picked up a great ball in from Steve Thomas and Lloyd’s shot cannoned back out off the post and Tywyn breathed again.

The hosts weatherd the early storm and on their first real attack, they went close to opening the scoring as Mark Edmondson found himself through on goal with only Michael Platt to beat, but he dragged his shot inches wide of the right hand post. Steve Thomas had a shot go wide before Town opened the scoring through Luke Tyson. A great move down the left saw Matty Roberts thread the ball through to Paul Williams, and he ran into the box and his low cross beat everyone except Luke Tyson who was near the far post and he tapped the ball home to give Town the lead.

Steve Thomas then had an effort go inches past the upright before Tom McElmeel passed the ball through to Luke Tyson, who ran towards goal, beating the challenge of Tywyn’s Paul Grant before firing the ball goalwards which was saved by Richards. Disaster struck a few minutes later as the home side equalised. A Tywyn corner was only partially cleared and the ball fell to Matthew Jones who shot from outside the area, the ball took a deflection and fell to Aled Jones, who it seemed was in an offside position, but the referee allowed play to continue and he fired the ball past Mike Platt to draw the teams level.

The goal lifted Tywyn / Bryncrug and a few minutes later, the home side should have taken the lead as Mark Edmondson found himself in a one on one position with Mike Platt, but Platt was down quickly to brilliantly save his shot before the ball was cleared to safety. This was a big let off for the Wellmen but 5 minutes later, Town had taken the lead. Tywyn’s Paul Grant raised his hand in the box and the ball hit his hand and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Tom McElmeel took the spot kick and beat the keeper to restore Town’s lead. The last chance of the half fell to Tywyn’s Aled Jones but his header went wide of Platt’s post.

The second half started like the first with Town putting the hosts under pressure and Phil Lloyd was only inches away from increasing Town’s lead with the first attack of the second half. Lloyd again fired wide a few minutes later before he made it 3rd time lucky on 51 minutes as he found the net after Steve Thomas’ cross beat the Tywyn defender and the ball was met by the unmarked Lloyd who fired home to give Town a 3-1 lead. A minute later, Tywyn nearly pulled on back as Aled Jones beat his marker and his shot was saved by Platt. Paul Williams then had a shot from outside the area which hit the crossbar and bounced down, it seemed over the line before spinning back into play but the referee didn’t give it.

Town’s Paul Williams watched as his shot was saved by Richards before John Leonard fired over after a good move involving Steve Thomas and Paul Williams. Graeme Williams then burst into the box and his low cross found Thomas but his shot was again saved by the host’s number 1. Town wrapped the game up on 69 minutes through Phil Lloyd. He found himself through on goal and he tapped the ball past the onrushing keeper and it crept into the bottom corner to give Town a 4-1 lead. Sub Danny Sim then got in on the action and his first touch saw him shoot at goal which was saved by Richards and his follow up shot was also saved to deny Sim a goal. The last attack of the half saw Tywyn’s Michael Roberts take a free kick which went over the bar.

The referee blew for full time and it was Town’s name still in the hat for the last 16 of the FAW Trophy and the win sets us up nicely for next week’s big Welsh Cup game at Buckley Town.
