Cookson Cup Round 1
Holywell Town 4-1 Barmouth & Dyffryn United

Holywell Town progressed into the next round of the Cookson Cup after a 4-1 win over Barmouth & Dyffryn at Halkyn Road.

The first chance of the afternoon fell to Holywell Town. Steve Thomas ran down the left wing and beat his marker to whip the ball over into the centre of the area, but Tom McElmeel’s header flew over the bar. A few minues later however, the visitors took the lead with their first real chance of the afternoon.

Barmouth took a throw in and the ball was laid off inch perfect by Sion Lloyd to Stuart Rogers who slotted the ball into the bottom corner to give Town’s keeper Danny Stanton no chance. McElmeel then beat a few challenges and found himself running on goal with only the keeper to beat, but his shot was saved well by Darren Andrews in Barmouth’s goal. A minute later however, Town were level. Steve Thomas, who was getting the better of his marker every time on the left crossed the ball over and Graeme Williams placed the ball into the bottom corner to give Town the deserved equaliser.

Barmouth’s Shane Jones was then put through on goal but his shot was brilliantly saved by Stanton before Luke Tyson scored to give Town the lead after a slight mix up in Barmouth’s rear guard. Tyson was involved in Town’s next attack but his shot was saved by Andrews in Barmouth’s goal. Another good cross by Thomas saw the ball fall for Paul Williams but his shot went over the bar and a few minutes later, Graeme Williams had a shot which Andrews parried before the ball was cleared to safety.
Shane Jones then saw his header fly over the bar before Dafydd Griffth rose well at the far post to get to the ball ahead of his marker but his header was saved by Andrews so at the break, the hosts had turned it around and were leading at the break.

The second half kicked off and Barmouth had the first chance as Stuart Rogers balsted over when he had time to control the ball first, before Shane Jones was put through by a brilliant ball from midfield but is effort was brilliantly saved by Stanton. Barmouth were looking dangerous and in search of the equaliser, they were getting the upper hand on the game so John Haseldin threw on Sam Jones and Graham Boylan to shake the front line up.

Jamie Jones, who had a good game ran at the Barmouth defence and his cross beat a couple of defenders and fell to Steve Thomas, but his shot was straight at Andrews. Sub Graham Boylan then ran on towards goal from the right wing, and he beat the challenge of the Barmouth defender but his cross was knocked out for a corner with Sam Jones waiting to strike for the ball. Barmouth’s Rogers then had a shot go wide before Town were awarded a penalty as Jamie Jones had been felled by a Barmouth Defender. Captain Paul Williams took the kick and fired into the bottom right corner with the keeper well beaten. A couple of minutes later, Boylan made the game safe by adding Town’s 4th with a tap in from a great run by Jamie Jones.

The referee blew for full time and Town were through to the next round of the Cookson Cuo where Gwlachmai at Halkyn Road await us.
