Opening weekend of the new season brings mixed fortunes for the Wellmen.

The first weekend of the new season saw Holywell Town 1st team welcome Gresford Athletic to Halkyn Road, and the Wellmen picked up their first 3 points of the season with a hard fought 1-0 win.

Both sides had chances to break the deadlock, with Town's Graeme Williams going closest by hitting the crossbar for the Wellmen and Gresford's Tom Freeman hitting the post in the first half.

The deadlock was broken on 82 minutes, as Sub Phil Lloyd scored the winner with his first touch, much to the delight of the good crowd.

Manager John Haseldin said after the game, "I'm really pleased with today, the lads played well in large periods of the game and we deserved the win. We will only get stronger as a group as the season goes on."

Scorer Phil Lloyd added, "I'm made up with the win today, the lads were brilliant. Its always tough the first game of the season. I'm buzzing to have opened my account as well!"

The Reserves travelled to Brymbo in their first match of the season and unfortunately, came home with no points after a 3-2 defeat.

The home side had a 2 goal advantage at the break but Connor Littler reduced the arrears 7 minutes into the second half from the penalty spot after he had been fouled to win the spot kick. Brymbo increased their lead with 5 minutes left on the clock but Littler grabbed his second of the game as the clock reached 90 minutes.

Despite Littler's two goals, it wasn't enough and the Reserves fell to defeat. The Reserves can open their account for the season on Tuesday evening as they welcome Hawaren Rangers to Halkyn Road for a 7.00pm kick off.
