As we now prepare for the new season, here's a review of last season written by Club Secretary Steve Roberts.

The season started with an away game at Denbigh Town, one of the fancied teams to do well this season, but the Wellmen didn’t read the script and demolished Denbigh by 5 goals to 1. Steve Lewis opened the scoring after only 4 minutes and the score remained 1-0 at the break. The second half was barely a few minutes old when Shaun Tuck added a second, then Holywell added to their tally through a brace by Jamie McDaid and Lewis grabbed his second of the game with a couple of minutes remaining. Next up was Rhyl at home, and the visitors had a 2 goal lead at the break, despite the mountain to climb, the Wellmen fought back and goals by Matty Kendrick and Steve Lewis salvaged a point for the Wellmen. Flint Town were next to visit Halkyn Road, and the homours were shared after a 3-3 draw, with Flint scoring from the penalty spot with 5 minutes remaining to level the scores. Jamie McDaid, Danny Desormeaux and Steve Lewis on the scoresheet for the Wellmen. The Wellmen then put in one of their worse performances of the season, going down 5-2 to Airbus at home, Steve Lewis and Shaun Tuck on the scoresheet then August drew to a close with the penalty shootout win over Welsh Premier side Prestatyn Town in the Nathaniel MG Cup.

September started and the Wellmen defeated Brickfield Rangers at home in the NEWFA Challenge Cup, before a 4-4 draw at Ruthin Town when again we conceded late in the game to share the points with the home side. Mark Winslade and Steve Thomas had us ahead at the break, and further goals in the second half from Gareth Sudlow and a Jamie McDaid penalty saw us 4-3 ahead until their last gasp equaliser. A great 3-1 win over Caersws at Halkyn Road followed before a tough 3-3 draw against Gresford Athletic at Halkyn Road saw the Wellmen level the scores deep into injury time through Danny Desormeaux. The Wellmen then travelled to bottom side Llandudno Junction, and despite taking an early lead through Steve Lewis, we were unable to build on this and Junction came back at us to lead 2-1 midway through the second half. This raised the Wellmen and 2 goals in 3 minutes late in the game by Sam Jones and Jamie McDaid saw the Wellmen take the points in a hard fought victory. Porthmadog came to Halkyn Road and left pointless after a great performance by the Wellmen saw us claim all three points with a 2-0 victory, Matty Kendrick and Jamie McDaid on target for the Wellmen.

October saw us knocked out of the FAW Nathaniel MG Cup at Newtown after a 2-0 loss, then Corwen travelled to Halkyn Road in the Welsh Cup and we progressed thanks to a 3-0 scoreline. We then travelled to Queens Park and came home with all three points after goals by Sam Jones and a brace by Mark Winslade saw us register a 3-0 win, before the month ended on a low after a 1-0 home defeat by Flint Town United in the HGA League Cup.

November also started badly for the Wellmen after we were knocked out of the Welsh Cup at home to Guilsfield, Town thinking they had won the game in the 87th minute after Lewis had given us a 2-1 lead, but 2 goals in injury time by the visitors saw their name go in the hat for the next round. Guilsfield then travelled back to Halkyn Road for the League fixture a week later and the game ended goaless. Town then travelled to League Leaders Caernarfon Town and returned pointless after a 4-2 defeat, before an excellent 4-1 win at Airbus saw us finish the month on a high with Steve Lewis bagging himself a hat trick and Sam Jones grabbed the other from the penalty spot.

December saw Holyhead Hotspur travel to Halkyn Road, but they fell to a 4-0 defeat with Steve Lewis grabbing his second hattrick in as many games and Jon Jones also getting on the scoresheet for the Wellmen. Town’s next match was the Boxing Day cracker away to Flint Town United, and Town claimed bragging rights after a great 3-0 victory, Matty Harvey, Mark Winslade and Sam Jones getting Town’s goals. The year ended with defeat with a 3-1 loss at Rhyl, Sam Jones grabbing a 70th minute penalty for the Wellmen.

The New Year started with a 1-0 victory away at Holyhead Hotspur, Steve Thomas’ chip claiming all three points, before a 5-0 victory over Ruthin Town at Halkyn Road. The game all level at the break, Town turned on the style with 5 second half goals through Matty Harvey, Marc Gunther and a Sam Jones hat trick. Town then travelled to Gresford Athletic and returned with the points after a 3-0 victory with Steve Thomas, Steve Lewis and Sam Jones on the scoresheet. Town then had their home game against Llandudno Junction abandoned with 20 minutes on the clock due to a poor part of the pitch deemed to be unplayable by the match referee. To make matters worse, Town were 3 -0 up at the time.

Due to poor weather that gripped North Wales, only one match was played in February and that was an 8-0 demolition at home to Queens Park. The Wellmen were 3 up at the break thanks to Sam Jones and a couple of Mark Winslade goals, then the floodgates opened in the second half with Jon Jones, Sam Jones grabbing another goal, Steve Lewis with a brace of goals and Mark Winslade completed his hat trick. Likewise in March, only one game survived the weather and that was against league leaders Caernarfon Town at Halkyn Road. A great game of football saw the sides share the spoils 1-1 in a game which was a great advertisement for the Huws Gray Alliance football league. Caernarfon Town took the lead midway through the first half, but Town battled back and won a penalty through Shaun Tuck who was playing his first game back for the Wellmen after a spell away, and Sam Jones stood up to take the penalty and fired past the keeper to level the scores. The Wellmen piled on the pressure looking for the winner, with Jon Jones and Steve Thomas all having shots saved by the Caernarfon Town keeper, then Sam Jones was harshly penalised for a foul on the keeper after the keeper dropped the ball with Jones pressurising him with the goal at his mercy.

Town then began the busy league run in but first, had to face Cefn Druids at the Rock in the NEWFA Challenge Cup quarter final. The match was switched to The Rock after Town’s pitch was doubtful to be passed fit, but this didn’t hamper the Wellmen and we ran out worthy 2-1 winners. Played on a cold night, a brace of goals by Mark Winslade saw the wellmen progress into the semi final against Airbus Broughton. Town returned to League action with a 8-0 victory over bottom placed Llandudno Junction, Shaun Tuck, Jon Jones, Mark Winslade, Sam Jones, Matty Harvey, Paul Williams and a brace of goals by recent signing Lee Davey completed the rout. Town then drew 1-1 against Penrhyncoch with Sam Jones grabbing Town’s goal early in the second half after the Roosters had taken the lead midway through the first half. Town then travelled to Caersws and came home with all three points after a 2-0 win, Steve Thomas opening the scoring and Mark Winslade added a second goal midway through the second half.
The Wellmen then completed the month with a home game against Guilsfield, but the great form the Wellmen were in deserted us and we slumped to a 2-0 defeat.

The Wellmen went into the last month of the season with 2nd place still a possibility, and first up was a local derby against Denbigh Town. This was the wellmen’s last home game of the season, and Manager John Hsaseldin’s last game in front of the home supporters. The Wellmen took the lead with quarter of an hour on the clock through Shaun Tuck, but the game turned sour for the Wellmen in the final few minutes of the first half as Denbigh scored 2 quick goals to go in at the break with the advantage. Tuck added a second goal early in the second half to bring the sides level, but Town were unable to add to their tally, and Denbigh added a third to make it a miserable end to the season at Halkyn Road. Town then travelled to Penrhyncoch but couldn’t get the victory and fell to a 1-0 defeat. Town then faced Airbus Broughton at Flint Town United’s Cae Y Castell in the NEWFA Challenge Cup semi final knowing that a victory would see us face Ruthin Town in the Final. Mark Winslade gave Town a great start scoring with 5 minutes on the clock, but Town couldn’t add to their tally until the 74th Minute when Steve Lewis put the game beyond Airbus. Shaun Tuck sealed the win in the 84th minute to book Town’s place in the final.
The Wellmen then travelled to Porthmadog for the final league game of the season, and after the hosts took a first half lead, Town battled back through Steve Lewis to share the points. Town’s recent poor form prevented us climbing any further up the table and we ended up in 5th place which is an excellent position and I’m sure we would have taken that back in August when the season kicked off.

Town then faced Ruthin Town in the NEWFA Challenge Cup Final at Airbus, and Town took the lead midway through the half through Mark Winslade. Ruthin then equalised a few minutes later before Ruthin were awarded a penalty which was very harsh on the Wellmen and they converted it to take a 2-1 lead into the dressing room at the interval. Town pressed looking for the equaliser to take the game into extra time but matters were made worse in the final 10 minutes when Shaun Tuck was mistakenly sent off for the Wellmen, and despite a few more chances, Town were unable to grab the equaliser and the Wellmen ended up runners up in the competition. It was a bitter end to the season for the Wellmen but everyone connected with the club will agree it has yet again been a great season and the lads have done us proud!
