Glan Conwy 1 – 1 Holywell Town

Played in typical end of season evening sunshine, Town returbed home with only a point after a 1-1 draw against Glan Conwy.

Town pressed for the early goal from the off, and with barely a couple of minutes on teh clock, Mark Orme had a shot deflected inches wide to win Town their first corner of the evening. From the resulting corner, a flick on at the near post saw the ball go across the face of the goal but no one was on hand to steer the ball home. With 10 minutes on the clock, Sam Jones brought a good save out of Adam Campion, who was forced to tap over Sam’s cross come shot then Mark Orme watched as his shot went over the crossbar.

Glan Conwy’s Mereck Knight won the ball and ran down the left wing, but just as he was about to cross the ball, Paul Williams stepped in and made a last minute tackle to prevent the cross, and the ball was cleared to safety. Town thought they had taken the lead a few minutes later, as John Haseldin’s header from a Sam Jones cross found the back of the net, but the Assistant Referee had his flag up and the goal didn’t count. A few minutes later, another Sam Jones cross found Tony Roebuck, but his shot flew inches over the bar.

More chances fell Holywell’s way and Haseldin again was only inches wide with a header at the far post. A few minutes later however, Town took the lead. Roebuck squared the ball to Tom Carney, and his shot from fully 30yards flew into the top corner and left the keeper with no chance of getting a hand to it. This was no more than Town deserved and the goal seemed to lift Glan Conwy as the next couple of chances fell to them, with Jake Walker firing wide of Stanton’s goal before Glan Conwy equalised on the stroke of half time thorugh Sam Sinkinson, who’s inch perfect chip over Stanton, gave Glan Conwy a share of the lead. In injury time of the first half, Town won a free kick on the edge of the box, but Sam Jones’ effort sailed over the bar.

Town started the strongest again in the second half, and the first real chance fell to Paul Williams. Sam Jones ran to the edge of the box before crossing the ball towards Williams in the box, but his effort was cleared off the line by a great sliding tackle by a Glan Conwy defender. A few minutes later Campion made another good save from John Haseldin’s header, and the hosts were able to clear the ball to safety. A couple of chances fell to Glan Conwy’s Steve Roberts and Brad Jones but their effort went inches wide.

On the hour mark, Sam Jones who was becoming a big threat going forward , saw a powerful shot come back off the crossbar before Town won a penalty as Jones was brought down just inside the area. Tony Roebuck stepped up to take the kick but his penalty kick was saved by Campion. Marc Guntehr then had an opportunity fly inches wide before he attempted a great over head kick but the keeper had it covered.
Gunther was again in the thick of the action a few minutes before the end as his shot was once again saved by Campion. Glan Conwy’s Bobby Tudor then watched as his free kick from a dangerous position flew over the bar before Stanton was forced to make a double save from Andy Booker. Gunther’s long throw in the final minute of stoppage time saw the ball flicked over near post but Liam Griffiths was able to knock the ball out for another corner ahead of Haseldin who was ready to force the ball home at the far post and the referee flew for full time..

Despite being disappointed with the result, the draw meant that Town remained unbeaten in all of their league games away from home, which in itself, is a great achievement.
