The Wellmen beat Mold 3-1 in the big Flintshire derby

The game got under way with the Wellmen kicking off. Town put on the early pressure, with Sam Jones having an effort which flashed inches past Eliott Quinlans left hand post. The opening goal came on 14 minutes, Town broke well, with Shaun Tuck pressing forward, his clever lob from the byline across the face of goal found Mark Connolly at the far post who headed home.
Town looked for a second with Tony Roebuck and Sam Jones both testing the keeper but he saved well. Town very nearly got the second goal with Shaun Tuck having a great shot and the goalkeeper pulling off a great save. Town looked the better of the two teams, Jake Cooke then had an effort from outside the area saved by Quinlan. Town very nearly grabbed a second on 40 minutes, Luke Edwards with a great corner in and Jacob Wise rises well to head the ball towards goal but it is cleared off the line by the Mold defender.
The referee blew for half time and the wellmen went in a goal to the good.
The second half got underway and with three minutes played, the visitors were reduced to 10 men as Ryan Coney is shown a red card for a foul on Luke Edwards. Mold started to get back in the game, and burst forward with Conner Kendrick, his cross into the box saw Mike Platt palm the ball away from the on rushing Daniel Warren, and the ball was cleared. Town then had the majority of possession, Jake Cooke causing problems for the Mold defence and his lay off to Luke Edwards saw Edward’ shot blocked and out for a corner. Another good ball into the box saw Connolly rise to challenge, but the keeper was on hand to gather the ball, then James Graham very nearly grabbed Town’s second, but his low shot was saved well by Quinlan at his near post.
Captain Tony Roebuck tried a deft chip which fell inches wide of the post before Mold nearly grabbed an equaliser, as Warren beat his marker and his low shot across the face of goal ran inches wide of Platt’s post. Town grabbed their deserved 2nd goal shortly afterwards, a ball over for Shaun Tuck and he controlled well, ran and beat 2 defenders before pulling the trigger and his shot flew into the back of the net! The visitors pulled one back soon after, Ben Howarth on hand to stab the loose ball past Mike Platt.
Any fear of Mold getting an equaliser were soon dashed a minute later. Luke Edwards picked up the ball close to the half way line, he burst forward and unleashed a fierce drive from outside the area and the ball flew into the top corner giving the keeper no chance! Great individual goal and Luke ran over to the supporters behind the goal.
Town had a couple more chances which didn’t really test Quinlan and Mold Alex put the Wellmen defence under a bit of pressure in the final few minutes but the Wellmen held on to the victory and kept their unbeaten run going. The win moves Town up to 5th in the Welsh National League Premier Division and with 3 weeks of cup matches to come, it was an important 3 points picked up by the Wellmen.
