Wellmen pick up point in their first Welsh National League match after 0-0 draw with Brymbo.

The Wellmen opened their league campaign with a tricky game against Brymbo on a wet August evening. Brymbo got the match underway and Town had a good start, Charlie Hughes through on goal but his effort was blocked by the Brymbo keeper. Then shortly afterwards, Brymbo’s Jake Prescott had a low effort saved by Mike Platt before another good move down the right saw Jake Cooke get to the byline, and his drag back was just a little too fast for the oncoming Mark Connolly.
Another good move down the left on 25 minutes saw the ball fall to Jacob Wise, but his effort goalwards was cleared with the goalkeeper beaten. Brymbo then had a good spell of pressure, with Andrew Noonan going close, and Platt was on hand to intercept a good cross from the left with the Brymbo attacker pressing forward. Brymbo then won a free kick in a dangerous position, but Jordan Deer’s kick beat the wall and the cross bar and went out for a goal kick.
Town were then involved in the best move of the match. Danny Dobbins beat the challenge of a couple of Brymbo players, fed the ball out to Charlie Hughes who runs with the ball for a few yards before putting in a great cross towards mark Connolly but his header goes inches ober the bar.
Couple of chances fell to both sides before the interval but neither goalkeeper was properly tested and as the referee blew for half time, the score remained goalless.

Town got the 2nd half underway and won an early free kick, but Iwan Rogers effort was saved by the keeper. Next chance fell to Brymbo, ball through for Chris Boyes to chase but his shot went wide of Mike Platt’s post. A good spell of pressure by Brymbo saw Mike Platt have to be alert and early off his line to save from Jake Prescott. Town then came close to scoring, a goalmouth scramble saw Shaun Tuck and Paul Williams desperate to get a strike on the ball goal wards without being blocked but the referee saw a foul on the Brymbo keeper and blew for a free kick. With the game entering the final 20 minutes, both sides looked for the winner, with the wet surface making it difficult to play good football but chances still fell to both sides.
As the game entered the final 10 minutes, the visitors very nearly took the lead, and the ball came out to Ryan Clarke, his looping effort was only inches over the bar and fell on the roof of the net. Brymbo then thought they had taken the lead after putting the ball in the net, but Billy New’s effort was disallowed after he fouled Danny Dobbins in the process of getting his shot on target. Deep within the final 10 mins, Luke Edwards saw the keeper off his line but his effort went wide of the post. Then Brymbo broke well down the left, and a low cross saw Jacob Wise intercept the ball out for a corner, and from the resulting corner, the visitors came close to breaking the deadlock but Mark Beech saw his shot over fly over the bar.
On reflection, the draw was a fair result for both teams and Town will be looking to getting their first win of the season on Satruday with their trip to Rhos Aelwyd.
