Wellmen unlucky to lose at Porthmadog

The Wellmen had a terrible start and conceded after a couple of minutes when Sion Williams burst down the wing and his low cross into the box was turned home by Julian Williams as his shot hit the roof of the net. The Wellmen battled to get back in the game and with a quarter of an hour played, the Wellmen drew level. A good interception by Tom Hartley saw him pass the ball forward for Steve Lewis to chase, and after a challenge just inside the area by Ceri James saw the striker fall to the ground and the referee pointed to the spot. Lewis got up to take the kick and fired the sides level as his spot kick beat Paul Pritchard in Porthmadog's goal. (see picture)

With half an hour played, Porthamdog nearly took the lead, as Jay Gibbs fired the ball goalwards from Sion Williams' corner but Josh Maldon was there to head the ball clear on the line. A couple of minutes later, the referee turned down Port's appeals for a penalty after Dan Dascalu though he was brought down in the box, then a couple of minutes later, the home side had a goal disallowed as Dascalu slotted the ball home but was in an offside position.

Mike Platt then pulled off a great save to deny Ifan Emlyn's shot, then up the other end, Paul Pritchard pulled off a good save to deny Lewis getting his second of the game. With a minute of the half remaining, Port won a corner and from Sion Williams' kick, the ball found Julian Williams' head and his header hit the back of the net. It was cruel on the Wellmen to concede so late in the half.

The second half got underway and both sides looked to add to the scoresheet. The home side having the better of the efforts and Mike Platt kept the strikers at bay. Town won a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the area after Tony Roebuck was brought down but Lewis effort was save well by Pritchard. With 70 minutes on the clock, Town came close to equalising. A defensive slip saw Aaron Pomeyie and Josh Sheridan combining on the left and the ball was fed through to Lewis who was through on goal, but his powerful shot was saved well by Pritchard to keep his side in the lead.

As the game entered the final few minutes, the home side increased their lead. Jay Gibbs fed the ball through to Shaun Cavanagh who burst through on goal and slotted the ball past the advancing Platt. With a couple of minutes remaining, Jay Gibbs picked up the ball around 35 yards out, and saw Platt was off his line and he hit a high looping ball over Platt and the ball found the back of the net.

Steve Lewis very nearly added a consolation goal for the Wellmen in injury time but his shot beat Pritchard but the ball hit the crossbar and out for a goal kick then the referee blew the whistle to end the game with the scoreline 4-1 to the home side.

The Wellmen can feel disappointed with the scoreline as we deserved more from the performance and the scoreline in many people's eyes flattered the home side.

Manager John Haseldin added, "I thought it was a harsh scoreline today, the lads worked hard and played well in spells. We were still in the game at 2-1 but got punished with a couple of goals late in the game as we tried to push on. Better days are around the corner I'm sure."
