A miserable wet night saw Holywell Town welcome Denbigh Town and it was the visitors who got us underway.

The match started with both sides looking to take control of the game, and the balance of play was in Denbigh Town’s half with Tony Roebuck taking control of the midfield with some great passes for Mark Winslade and Connor Littler to chase. A good move from the back saw Littler control the ball well, and fed the ball across to Sam Jones, he ran forward a few yards before shooting but it went wide of Craig Vernon.
Metcalf was called into action, punching clear with Mark Roberts challenging, then at the other end, Harvey was brought down on the edge of the area and the referee played advantage until the ball went out before pulling play back for the free kick. Sam Jones kick evaded everyone’s head and went out for a goal kick. Holywell pressed for the opener and Vernon punched the ball clear with Winslade challenging. Then Harvey wasn’t too far away from connecting from a good ball in from the left. Another Jones free kick into the box was just a little too high for the onrushing matty Kendrick with the goal at his mercy.
With a couple of minutes remaining of the half, the visitors took the lead. Sam Jones bat the offside and burst down the left and into the box. His low cross across face of goal gave the Denbigh’s Mark Roberts the simplest of tap-ins to give his side the lead. It was harsh on the Wellmen and a minute later, the referee blew for half time.
The games got underway with Town trailing by a goal to nil, and a minute into the half, a slip by Kendrick saw Sam Jones pick up the ball but his shot was blocked by Metcalf. A few minutes later, Denbigh had a shot blocked, before Town equalised. A good ball into the box saw a defender handle the ball and the referee pointed to the spot. Sam Jones stepped up and fired the ball home giving the keeper no chance.
Town had the grit between their teeth and looked to take the lead. The next move saw Town come close to taking the lead, a great ball into the far post saw Littler rise well but guided his header wide of the target. Another shot saw the ball go over the bar but Denbigh then went up the other ends and took the lead, when they took advantage of a defensive mix up and Mark Roberts picked up the loose ball and grabbed his second of the game.
The Wellmen then made a double substitution with Jonathon Jones and Marc Gunther coming on for Danny Desormeaux and Joe Carey, and from the next attack, the Wellmen very nearly equalised when Littler got up well to head the ball against the underside of the crossbar, and with the Wellmen claiming it had crossed the line, Denbigh broke clear and in a 3 on 1 situation, the ball then broke for Alfonso Fosu-Mensah who found himself through on goal and slotted past Andy Metcalf to make it 3-1 to the visitors.
The final few minutes saw the Wellmen press to get back into the game, but it was the visitors who created the best chances, with Metcalf saving well from Fosu-Mensah to deny the player on loan from Llandudno his second of the match.
The referee then blew for full time and the Wellmen trooped off the pitch disappointed with the result, and all eyes now turn to Tuesday night when we welcome Gresford Athletic to Halkyn Road.
