Honours shared in big local derby

The game started with both sides looking to take control of the game, first effort falling to Damien Ketley but he dragged his shot wide, then Flint's Kyle Smyth broke clear but Andy Metcalf produced a great save to keep the score 0-0. Town very nearly broke the deadlock with 10 minutes on the clock, from a corner Smyth got up well at the far post but headed wide of Metcalf's goal. Smyth was having a great game up front for Flint and a few minutes after heading wide, Flint Town supporters in the main stand thought he had given them the lead, after beating a couple of challenges by the Wellmen defenders, Smyth shot goalwards from a tight angle but his shot hit the side netting.

The next chance fell to the Wellmen, but Sam Jones' shot flew over the bar after being put through by the returning Tony Roebuck then a few minutes later, Flint took the lead.
A good run in from the right saw Smyth cut through to the box, and his low cross found Kai Wallis, and his shot was saved by Metcalf but the ball fell to Mark Cadwallader, and his shot was blocked but he managed to slot home on the second attempt through a crowded penalty area to make it 1-0 to Flint Town United.

The final chance of the half fell to Holywell Town with Lee Davey picking up the loose ball and his lay off to Sam Jones saw him control the ball before getting his shot in, but Sam Heart was able to block the shot and it defelcted out for a corner which came to nothing, and the hosts went in at the break a goal to the good.
The second half began, and Town went in search of the equaliser. First chance fell to Holywell as Paul Williams’ cross was flicked on goalwards towards Ketley but his effort was deflected out for a corner. Then a few minutes later, Lee Davey wasn’t too far away with a shot on the turn but went wide of Josh Harts goal. Five minutes into the second half, Town were greatful to Andy Metcalf who produced a great save in a one on one position with Alli Sheriff, forcing the ball out for a corner. That save proved decisive a few minutes later as Town equalised. A great cross from the right by Ryan Davies saw Ketley control the ball well, before shooting low into the bottom corner with Hart beaten.
Flint Town then won a free kick in a dangerous position and Mike Williams stepped up to take it but was deflected out for a corner which came to nothing. Jack Welsh then had a shot go wide as Flint looked take the lead again. Cadwallader then fired over when in a good position before Andy Brown headed straight at Metcalf. Holywell Town then put the hosts under a bit of pressure, and it paid off a few minutes later as Town then took the lead. Tony Roebuck’s corner was inch perfect for Matty Kendrick who headed home at the far post to the loud cheer of the Wellmen supporters dotted around the ground.
The lead didn’t last long as Flint equalised 5 minutes later from a corner, when Cadwallader’s header across the face of goal found the far corner for his second goal of the game and the sides were then level again. Paul Williams then put over a great cross and Roebuck’s effort was blocked and went wide by the challenge of the Flint defender. Flint substitute Jake Hampson then had an effort go wide after a long range shot before having another shot a few minutes later which Metcalf saved. As the game entered the final 10 minutes Town, a great move by Town saw Ketley dispossess the ball off the Flint defender, and he put in a great cross for the onrushing Paul Williams, who controlled and brought the ball down before laying off for Sam Jones, but his shot went over Hart’s crossbar. Lee Davey then had a shot saved well by Hart, but Ketley was offside for the follow up shot before Flint won a free kick deep into injury time but Cadwallader’s effort went over the bar. Referee Mikey Grey then blew for full time and the Wellmen has picked up their first point of the season in this local derby.
