Town go on a goal rampage at Halkyn Road against Llanfairpwll.

Holywell Town 15 – 1 Llanfairpwll

It was top versus bottom this afternoon as leaders Holywell Town welcomed Llanfairpwll to Halkyn Road. The game was only a couple of minutes old when Town took the lead through Sam Jones. A few minutes later, it was 2 as Matty Harvey fired home through a crowded penalty area. Things got worse for the visitors with 12 minutes on the clock as Phil Lloyd nodded home at the far post before Town won a penalty on 16 minutes which Sam Jones took and fired home to give Town an early 4 goal lead.
Jones then got his hat trick with 20 minutes on the clock, firing home past Connor Hughes before Harvey got his second of the game on 27 minutes, tapping home to round off a great Holywell town move. Hughes then saved Llanfairpwll’s blushes a few minutes later when he made a great double save to prevent Town going further ahead, before saving Tom McElmeel’s header shortly afterwards after an inch perfect free kick by Sam Jones.

Llanfairpwll’s first real shot on goal came with half hour played when Arwyn Owen saw his shot saved by Mike Platt before Town won a corner and the ball was cleared only as far as Graeme Williams but his shot flew inches wide. Llanfairpwll pulled one back on 41 minutes through James Harnedy but Town grabbed another on the stroke of half time when Sam Jones fired home again from the penalty spot to give Town a 7-1 lead at half time.

The second half was only a few minutes old when Jones added his 5th of the game, cutting inside before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner then Paul Williams got himself on the scoresheet, shooting low into the far corner to make it 9-1 to the Wellmen. Tom McElmeel grabbed Town’s 10th, a great run and his tricky footwork saw him beat a number of challenges, before firing home from a tight angle to round off a great solo move.

Paul Williams got his 2nd and Towns 11th on the hour mark. Sam Jones stood to take a free kick and instead of lifting it into the penalty area, he surprised everyone by pulling the ball back to Paul Williams who fired home hard and low through a crowded area and saw the ball nestle into the bottom corner despite the desperate lunge by Hughes in Llanfairpwll’s goal. Luke Tyson then got Town’s 12th, picking up a great through ball by Lloyd, he lifted the ball over the goalkeeper with a great finish. Lloyd got the 13th with a glancing header to beat the keeper from a Paul Williams cross, before Sam Jones was put through by Lloyd, but in a 1 on 1 situation with the keeper, Jones watches as the keeper made a great save to prevent Jones grabbing another goal for Town. The keeper then made a good save to prevent Connor Hughes crowning his home debut with a goal.

Llanfair’s Matty James had an effort saved by Platt before Player Manager John Haseldin came on for the last 10 minutes in replace of Paul Williams. Hasledin’s first touch nearly saw him score, heading over from a Sam Jones corner but the Wellmen’s Manager didn’t have too long to wait for his next effort, as another cross by Sam Jones saw the ball find Hasledin’s feet, who then fired home to the roof of the net to give the keeper no chance. The resulting goal celebration also won John the best goal celebration of the day award! With 5 minutes remaining, Sam Jones rounded off the scoring by adding his 6th of the game and Town’s 15th before Jack D’arcy saw his header go inches wide from a Connor Hughes corner in Town’s last attack of the match. It was a great afternoon by the Wellmen and all connected with the club would have to go back a long way to find a game where the Wellmen scored 15 goals in a game, and the result saw Town extend their lead at the top of the Welsh Alliance League.
