The Match got underway and the opening exchanges were pretty evenly matched, with the match flowing from end to end with neither team having a clear chance on the opponents goal. The closest the game came to a goal was on 15 minutes when Mold's Morgan Roberts fired high over the crossbar. Mold had the better of the possession for a spell midway through the first half but again unable to test Danny Stanton in the Wellmen's goal.
The Wellmen's first real chance came just before the half hour mark. Jamie Breese was brought down on the edge of the box and the resulting Free Kick taken by Ilan ap Gareth forced keeper Michael Crossley to save well low to his left and the ball was cleared with Breese ready to pounce.
A few minutes later, Mold took the lead, winning a corner, the ball found Morgan Roberts whos shot found the back of the net through a crowd of players. With 36 minutes on the clock, Mold should have doubled their lead. A good ball over the top for James Davies to chase and one on one with Stanton, he failed to hit the target and placed his shot wide of the target. The final few minutes of the half saw Holywell with the majority of the possession but unable to break down Mold Alex and couldn't get an equaliser before the half time whistle.
The second half got underway and the Wellmen started much stronger. After plenty of possession and playing good football, they got their rewards on 51 minutes and equalised through Jamie Breese. Tom Bibby with a great ball into the box, ball falls to Breese who fired the ball home to level the scores. The goal lifted the Wellmen and Brady McGilloway neraly added a second moments after Breese's goal. A good ball through for him to chase saw him control and burst forward, and as he was about to shoot a last gasp tackle by a Mold defender saw the chance gone and the ball went out for a corner, the resulting corner found Danny Sullivan at the far post but he was unable to head the ball on target.
Town piled on the pressure and Danny Andrews went close forcing the keeper to make a good save, then Jake Roberts fired in a low cross which had to be cleared with Breese in a dangerous position to shoot goalwards if the ball got to him. Wellmen went close again moments later from a corner, ball drops to Sullivan who fires goalwards but the keeper was there to make another good save.
With the game in the final 10 minutes, the Wellmen took the lead, and again it was through Jamie Breese. A good move saw the ball get picked up by Ryan Edwards, he had a bit of space and lined up a great shot which the keeper could only parry onto the crossbar, and the ball fell kindly to the on rushing Breese who tapped home the rebound.
The game entered injury time and the Wellmen looked like they had done enough to book their passage into the final, but with 95 miuntes on the clock, disaster struck as Mold capitalised and slotted home an equaliser through Lucas Gregson in a crowded Holywell Town penalty area.
The Wellmen to their credit didn't drop their heads, and with the majority of the good crowd gearing up foe Extra Time, Danny Sullivan had other ideas.
The Wellmen piled on the pressure and looked for a last gasp winner, and that winner came through Danny Sullivan, who fired home from 35 yards as his fierce low drive beat everyone, giving the keeper no chance and as the ball nestled into the back of the net, Sullivan and team mates ran over to the Wellmen supporters to celebrate the late winning goal.
The referee blew for full time as soon as the match restarted and Sullivans late late winner saw the Wellmen reach the Challenge Cup Final once again and will face either Airbus UK Broughton or Corwen to see who will be crowned NEWFA Challenge Cup champions for 2024/25.
Thanks to all the supporters who made the journey this evening, you were most certainly heard and cheered on the lads until the final kick of the game. See you at the final!
