Town hit Junction for 7 in one of their biggest wins of the season to date.

Holywell Town 7-1 Llandudno Junction

Holywell Town welcomed Llandudno Junction to Halkyn Road and wanted to make amends for the defeat suffered a few weeks earlier against our opponents in the Mawddach Challenge Cup.

The game was barely a minute old when the Wellmen took the lead through Tom Carney. His cross come shot beat everyone and nestled into the far side of Junction’s goal to give Holywell a dream start. Quarter of an hour later, it was 2-0 as Graeme Williams hit a great volley and the ball flew into the net to give the keeper no chance.

Junction hit back and went close on a couple of times but Holywell Town keeper Danny Stanton was not really tested. The next goal you sensed would be decisive, and fortunately for Town, it fell to Sam Jones who made it 3-0 with a close range tap in. Was there anyway back now for Junction from here??

Junction won a free kick which flew inches wide before Alan Davies pulled one back for the visitors, tapping in from a goal mouth scramble following a corner from the left. Junction then thought they had a second a few minutes later, a shot from outside the area hit Stanton’s cross bar before falling for Jamie Jones who tapped in but the linesman’s flag was raised for offside. Any fears of a Junction fight back was dashed soon after as Sam Jones added Town’s 4th and his second of the game. Ian Griffiths broke free and rounded the keeper before crossing the ball across into the centre and Sam was on hand to hit the ball home. Then a few minutes later, Griffiths went close, shooting wide from a tight angle.

The teams went in at the break, with Town leading by four goals to one and surely, there was no way back for Junction. Five minutes into the second half, Griffiths ran with the ball towards the goal and was brought down by the goalkeeper to earn a penalty. Tony Roebuck took the spot kick and beat the keeper to make it 5-1 for Holywell. It was all Holywell now and Josh Roberts had a shot go inches wide before Griffihts saw a shot saved by the Junction number 1.

Midway through the half, Roebuck added his second by shooting from over 35 yards and the ball beat the keeper and nestled in the bottom corner of the net before Josh Roberts again went close, but his powerful shot come back off the cross bar. Marc Gunther rounded off the scoring scoring with a great shot from 30 yards to give the keeper no chance.

Stanton was foced to make a save in the dying minutes but the goal wouldn’t have counted as the forward was in an offside position and as the Referee blew for full time, Town walked off to a round of applause and had secured one of their biggest wins of the season. Confidence will be high going into Saturday’s game at Nefyn where Town will be looking at gaining their third win in a week.
